Braegnok Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 OK .Ive decided to go with the i7 5920k and the and considering the Asus sabertooth MB. Any thoughts on the choice of MB as well as a good mem to help get the highest clocks speeds. Thanks. The i7-5820K is limited to 28 PCI Express lanes,.. that aside it easily overclocks to 4.0 +GHz. I would go with quad-channel DDR4 3000 memory. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233740

Thanks for the mem advice.
Fight Game Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 The newest graphic cards may see an improvement from the pcie lane at x8 vs x16. If you will ever use 2 cards you should check into it. Or if you still have this system when the next generation comes out. 2 cards at x16 = 32. Plus the new ssd cards use pcie lanes, not to mention any other cards (sound, network, etc) you may use.

ir_cow Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 Intel limted the 5820k to 28 PCIE 3.0 Lanes. While that won't affect most people, if you load up your system with M.2 SSDs and 2 or more video cards, you will run into bandwidth issues. The 5930k and I believe the Broadwell Intel Core i7-6850K, 6800k, 6900k all have 40 lanes.
Braegnok Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 (edited) With X99 platform if you plan on running SLI @ full 3.0 X 16 on both cards along with other hardware @ 3.0 X 8, 3.0 X 4 as well,.. you will need a 40-Lane chip,.. sorry I was not more clear on earlier post. i7-5930K : http://ark.intel.com/products/82931/Intel-Core-i7-5930K-Processor-15M-Cache-up-to-3_70-GHz i7-5820K : http://ark.intel.com/products/82932/Intel-Core-i7-5820K-Processor-15M-Cache-up-to-3_60-GHz Edited July 21, 2016 by Braegnok

dling Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 Thank you guys very much. I thought the 28 lanes would only be a problem if I used more then two vga cards.I had no idea that it would impact the performance of SSD's.
dling Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 Ok. After further review it seems that the x99 may not be the best MB choice. I'm going to rethink this.
Braegnok Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 (edited) Going with a basic 1151 gaming rig would serve your needs,.. Z170 motherboard, i7-6700K CPU, and 4X4GB DDR4 Dual-Channel 3200 memory,.. will set you back about $700 total cost. Fight Game Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 But he still wouldn't be able to sli with the slots being at x16. And maybe, even the newest cards don't need x16. imo, the only reason to go with a 2011v3 cpu/board is if you want to sli or crossfire, and if you do, then you shouldn't limit yourself to 28 lanes. Because chances are, you will still have this system and may want to sli the next generation of video cards too, and nobody knows if those cards will need the x16 bandwidth. I understand it's a lot more money to step up to the ones that do at least 40 lanes, so it's a pretty big decision. If you don't want or need the 40 lanes, then socket 1151 seems to be the way to go. If you could find out if the 1080gtx uses more than a x8 bandwidth slot, would make your decision a lot easier. If it doesn't then maybe 28 would be enough
Fight Game Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 (edited) In this review, the 980gtx was 1% or less difference from x8 slot to a x16. I can't find any reviews using the newest cards. https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GTX_980_PCI-Express_Scaling/21.html Edited July 21, 2016 by Fight Game
