In regards to PCIe lanes. Z170 Intel-based systems actually have two sets of PCIe lanes: one from the CPU and one from the Chipset. The CPU lanes are used primarily for graphics cards and other add-on devices. For the 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes that are available from Skylake CPUs, the Z170 chipset has the ability to split up the lanes two or three ways which allows for the use of multiple video cards or simply more PCIe devices to be directly connected to the CPU as long as they do not need to run at full x16 speeds.

So basically on Z170 motherboard the chipset PCIe lanes are additional lanes on top of the lanes provided  by the CPU,..

Processor PCIe Configuration : 1x16 or 2x8 or 1x8+2x4,.. Chipset PCI-E Lanes (Gen) : 20(3.0),.. plus 3  PCIe storage devices/SSDs @ (x4 M.2 or x2 SATA Express) and 6 SATA 6Gb/s, with 26 HSIO Lanes.

That's plenty enough for basic gaming rig.

man Im so confused .x99 or not x99. it looks like the x99 MB provides more lanes then the z170. Dammit man .This is getting more and more frustrating the more I read.

Im home from work for a while due to having my tonsils removed today. Damn my throat hurts. :(

Are any of you using the x99 board ? From what I have read their not really good gaming boards. Mostly used for workstations.

So the overclocking potential is low.

In this review, the 980gtx was 1% or less difference from x8 slot to a x16. I can't find any reviews using the newest cards.

You have a good point, right now there is no difference between 8x and 16x PCIE 3.0 because the extra bandwidth is not used. Maybe with the 1080 Ti @ 4k we might to start seeing above 8x 3.0 being utilized.

The 28Lanes chips are limiting if you really plan on loading up with M.2 or U.2 SSDs since each uses 4x PCIE. Some boards even turn off the other PCIE slots or automatically limit to the video card to 8x and disable other SATA ports. Once again not a big deal but the X99 is only beneficial if A) you want more PCIE Lanes B) more ram (above 64gb) and C) more than 4 cpu cores. Otherwise the 1551 Z170 platform is a better choice and waaaay cheaper.

I dont believe that at all. They cost more, but they overclock as high as the chip allows. They produce more heat and are different than the other socket versions. Haswell-E isn't exactly the same as Haswell, which can be a factor, but I wouldn't say they can't OC as well.

So if I don't plan on using the m.2 ssd which I don't the z170 and 5820k would be fine. This is what I am planning on building. A z170 MB 5820k cpu gtx 1080ti when released and using all other parts in my current system. I want to let all of you know how much I really appreciate your help. Thanks .

Wow. I can't keep it straight. I do want the 5820k,so I guess it's the x99. I could have been a politician with the way I have changed my mind so many times. So it will be a x99 board,5820k cpu,16gig of recommended from the makers of the MB the 1080ti plus everything else needed from current system. I hope this is a great machine.

I think it will be an awesome machine! Remember the X99 platform uses Quad channels for the ram so 4 sticks! You can run two, but why not get the extra bandwidth from 2 more?

I can't find it anymore but G.Skill had a sweet set of 3200 CAS15 which is probably the best ratio for price vs performance. Not that ram speed really makes any difference for a number of years now.
