New 60Tbps Cable Connects United States and Japan

Recommended Posts

Google has worked with five Asian telecom companies to create "the highest-capacity undersea cable ever built," capable of speeds up to 60Tbps. The 9,000km cable was built by NEC at a cost of $300 million and connects Oregon to two locations in Japan. Google plans to use its share of the bandwidth "to support our users, including Google Apps and Cloud Platform customers. This is especially exciting, as we prepare to launch a new Google Cloud Platform East Asia region in Tokyo later this year. Dedicated bandwidth to this region results in faster data transfers and reduced latency as GCP customers deliver their applications and information to customers around the globe." In the world of computing where the fastest technologies don't stay the fastest for long, Microsoft and Facebook are already working on a 160Tbps cable that will connect the United States to Europe.
