Facebook and Microsoft are Teaming Up to Lay New Cable Across the Atlantic

Recommended Posts

If you are downloading a lot of files or regularly streaming, you will probably want to have a faster connection from whatever company is serving you. When you are a company that needs to move tremendous amounts of data, sometimes going for the next best plan is not the best choice. At least that seems to be what Facebook and Microsoft have concluded, as the two Internet giants have decided to work together with Telxius to lay a new data cable across the Atlantic Ocean. This cable will have a bandwidth of some 160 Tbps, and Facebook and Microsoft will be enjoying the majority of that, but other companies will also be able to purchase some of the bandwidth.

Many data cables already cross the Atlantic, but this one will be a bit different than most, as it will stretch from Virginia to Spain. Typically these cables are located further north on the American side of the ocean, even though there are a lot of data centers located in Northern Virginia. By locating one end here, it will lower the latency the companies have to put up with.

The name of this new cable is MAREA, which is Spanish for tide, and construction is expected to begin in August, completing in October, 2017.
