AllYourF0rt Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 (edited) Hi everyone! I'm going to be building a new desktop in a month or so. I need to get some comments on my part selection. I will be mainly using this to game on. Such games as Diablo 3, Team Fortress 2, Tribes: Ascend, Battlefield 4, Witcher 3, and other next gen titles. Here are the parts. Case: Fractal Design R4 Blackout http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352038 Motherboard: Asrock X99 Extreme 4 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157543&cm_re=asrock_x99_extreme4-_-13-157-543-_-Product Processor: 5930k http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117403&cm_re=5930k-_-19-117-403-_-Product HSF: Noctua U14s http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA9PV3Y61194&cm_re=noctua-_-35-608-041-_-Product Video Cards: Sli Gigabyte GTX 980 Ti Xtreme http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125837&cm_re=gigabyte_980_ti_xtreme-_-14-125-837-_-Product Storage: Samsung 950 Pro 512 gb: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA12K3U60461&cm_re=950_pro-_-20-147-467-_-Product Wireless Adapter: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833389035 Memory: Corsair Dominator Platinum 16 gb DDR CAS 10 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233791 Power Supply: EVGA 80 Plus Platinum 1200 watt http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438029 Monitor: Asus PB287q http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236399&cm_re=monitor-_-24-236-399-_-Product Sound: Beyerdynamic DT990 Premium 600 ohm http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA7VT3UF3953&cm_re=beyerdynamic_dt_990-_-0TH-00JD-00058-_-Product Starting out I will be getting just one 980 ti I've heard it can max Diablo 3 and TF2 @ 60 FPS 4k. A month later I'll get the other 980 to play Witcher 3 and BF4. I won't really be OC the CPU just the Video Cards. Thanks for any input! paulktreg Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 Looks like a great build to me! Have you not considered water cooling the processor? The only tiny concern might be the case. Don't get me wrong I love the Fractal cases, I have one myself, but you only have a couple of mm clearance on the graphics card unless you remove the top drive cage, and if you ever go SLI space and temperatures may be a problem? I haven't really thought about water cooling. I've heard the Noctua would be more than adequate. I will remove the HDD cage as I will only be running the one M.2 SSD. The case already comes with 2x140mm case fans. I will be adding a side fan and a couple more as well. paulktreg Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 The Noctua will be more than adequate and if you are only running the SDD then all's good. Enjoy your new build!

AllYourF0rt Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 (edited) So I put the hammer down. I just bought everything on the list except the video card and monitor. I will be buying those on Friday. I got the same RAM but went with 2400 MHz. I'm gonna get the EVGA 980 ti Classified instead of the Gigabyte. I ran a power supply calc with the above system 2 980 ti oc'ed and it said PSU needed was 987 watt so I'm good! Can't wait! Got the Fractal R5 Define on sale forgot to say. RedFury77 Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 All that muscle and then you're going with a little 28" 4k monitor? Money doesn't seem to be a factor, so go with this instead: Acer Predator X34 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009869
AllYourF0rt Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Aha that Acer monitor looks crazy. I'm building this machine for 4k. I just looked at Noctua's website it says for my motherboard the U14s will overhang the 1st pcie slot rotate it 90 degrees. I really hope this is not the case. Too late now I already paid for it. Fight Game Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 I have to ask. Why would you choose the 5930k over the 6700k?
AllYourF0rt Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Supports 40 pcie and ddr4 and it's 6 cores.
Fight Game Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 (edited) but for gaming, and most other things for that matter, is there any advantage to 8 threads vs 12? Z170 boards have 20 pcie lanes, isn't that enough? And 6700K is ddr4. Edited March 31, 2016 by Fight Game
