potatochobit Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 (edited) what is best for storage? I really just want to store videos and music not run programs or video games from what I understand, the SD card is much slower but would that even be noticeable loading 30min movies? the benefit of the SD card is I can leave it in the windows tablet permanently but the USB 3.0 is faster and cheaper, I believe than a 128GB SD XC EDIT: wow, it is cheaper to get an external SSD instead of a USB 3.0 stick that is crazy Edited November 20, 2015 by potatochobit
bigball1 Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Dont want just a plan old normal external hard drive.Or is this to be used on a tablet for travel or something on the road all the time?
IVIYTH0S Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Does your tablet have a usb port? Is that the intended target device?
potatochobit Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 yeah its a microsoft surface 3 TABLET has one USB 3.0 and a SD slot I use a portable hard drive at home but like on an airplane I want to cut down on wires and such since flash sticks have been getting cheaper I was thinking maybe it's time to make a switch
IVIYTH0S Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 You can get decent 128GB USB 3.0 flash drives for pretty cheap now, 256GB drives aren't quite there yet (not counting the one I got free after rebate a while ago ) but the speed and versatility would far outweigh them being less streamlined with the tablet. Especially if you're swapping it back and forth a lot.
Waco Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 For storage it doesn't matter.
Guest onions Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 I'm curious, from a speed point of view, not just for storage... Is an SD card faster or USB 3.0 flash drive faster?
El_Capitan Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 For a tablet, a microSD card is just more convenient. If you want cheap, you can always buy multiple fast 64GB microSD cards rather than one big fast one. If you want cheap, but big, just get a SSD and a SATA to USB adapter, and then another USB to microUSB adapter. Or, if you want to go a bit smaller, a mSATA SSD, and a mSATA to USB housing adapter, and a USB to microUSB adapter.
