jdm_freek Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 so a few months back i dropped my 4690k and thoght i did no damage wrong.. well it stopped working so in a pinch i picked up a g3258 from my local frys electronics for $39 i am in the middle of playing gta 5 and i was quite scared that it would not run it.so i overclocked it to 4.5ghz at 1.35v kept all settings the same and you guessed it massive stuttering. but after a little tinkering all i had to do was set vsync to half so its locked at 30fps and it runs perfect. so for $40 i have to say i am very pleased i do plan on grabbing a 4770k/4790k when i can but i am in no hurry . just thoght i would share. Waco Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 How did it die? Dropping a CPU shouldn't be an issue unless you physically damaged it. EDIT: If it is really dead would you want to sell it? I need a new keychain and a Haswell would be fun.
ccokeman Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 Could be 1.35v
El_Capitan Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 1.35V's been steady for my 4690K's.
Nyt Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 1.35v is what he said he's using on the G3258. I'm assuming he previously used 1.295v on the 4670k in his sig.

I got the 4690 K from Craigslist I traded my 4770 plus $100 so there's no telling what kind of abuse the previous owner put on it. 1.35v is what he said he's using on the G3258. I'm assuming he previously used 1.295v on the 4670k in his sig.Yeah on my4690 K I use 1.29 volts and my temps are always good never above 65 The G 3258 on the other hand seeing I only paid 40 bucks for it I'm going to abuse the hell out of it. 4.5 took about 10 seconds to achieve
Waco Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 Could be 1.35vI'd be surprised if that small amount of voltage caused such an early death. I'm thinking the prior owner may have overvolted it like crazy and it finally succumbed.

But on the bright side it gives me an excuse to find me a 4790 K
ccokeman Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 Haswell is a bit less voltage tolerant.

insan3 Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 i really doubt it was the over clock, what do you mean by "though i did no dmg" ?
jdm_freek Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 i have my eyes on a 4790k but evga b stock has some pretty good deals right now as well this g3258 is a great cpu for what it is but it does not perform well in multi gpu setups i running two 660 ti p.e. and only seeing 50% scaling even at 4.6ghz so i may grab a nice single gpu 980/fury and upgrade the cpu platform to broadwell later.
