Asrock 970 Pro3 R2.0 + Athlon II X4 640

Hi all,

 

I need to ask some question about OC'ing my pc.

 

My system specs are:

Athlon II X4 640 @3000MHz (Stock)

Asrock 970 Pro3 R2.0

Visipro DDR3 2x4GB PC12800

HIS R9 270 ICEQX2 Boost Clock

 

Proc temp:

Idle @21-25

Gaming @40-45

 

According to Asrock's website, this mobo has a 4+1 phase (I know it's bad for heavy overclocking) and support FSB 2400MHz (4.8 GT/s)

 

Since my processor has a locked multiplier @15x so the only way to OC it is to play with HT Ref clock so it will affect HT Bus speed and RAM to (OC'ing it)

 

The stock multiplier is 15x200 = 3000MHz

 

I'm not going to OC much, I just want to reach 3300MHz with a stock cooler and not to mess around with the voltage etc.

 

Now, the questions are:

 

1.If I lower the HT multiplier from 10x to 9x in BIOS, the pc will shut itself down makes a clicking noise and then turn itself back on, is it normal? (Almost gave me a heart attack when it happened)

 

2.Let's say if I didn't lowered the HT multiplier to 9x keep it @10x and up the HT Ref Clock to 220 in order to reach 3300MHz (15x220) the HT bus will run @2200MHz from the default value @2000MHz is it safe?

 

4.Do I need to lower my RAM freq to 553MHz from 667MHz? with 15x220 scenario?

 

3.If you guys got any advice on how to OC my pc to reach 3300MHz max any advice will be appreciated.

I have not touched AMD for so long that I do not remember an accurate/complete info, but I can give some suggestions.  Here is what I will do:

 

1. Get cheap liquid cooling with 120mm radiator at least.

2. Get to know how far the CPU can be pushed.

3. Raise HT frequency incrementally with power for CPU.
4. Drop DRAM frequency not to over OEM's recommendation.

5. Understand the power setting for overclocking CPU. Dvid+Offset+Vdroop=Vcore (This is the formula for votage setting between idle and load.)

6. Once you successfully set it up, make sure the temperature stays cool.

7. Run Prime 95 and Intel BurnTest to ensure the stability. (You need temperature monitors for your device components while running the tests)

 

I will leave multiplier alone unless you want to stay at certain clock speed.

I am sure that there are more people here, can definitely give you better recommendations.

It's been a while since I've oc'ed an amd but I do remember raising the fsb at least 15 or 20 with no problems with the memory running faster, just make sure to keep an eye on your temps when running a load and you should be fine, they are great oc'ers.

So it is safe then. Currently running @3225 MHz (15x215) with Bus Speed @2150 will test it for a few hours and if its stable I will move up to 15x220, thanks

The performance increase won't be noticed at all in either gaming nor daily computer use.

Hi,

 

My PC Currently running @3300MHz (15x220) with 733Mhz mem freq at 9-9-9-24 timings, so far so good, temps hardly reach 50 degrees while gaming (Crysis Warhead, Alien Isolation, Tessmark) 1080 full detail

 

Only 300Mhz because I'm new to overclocking and from what I've learned that I need to lower the HT speed below 10x if I want to OC higher

 

But the board shut itself down makes one clicking sound and turn itself back on after I changed the HT speed, that's scary because I just upgrade my board from Biostar A880G+ to Asrock 970 Pro3 and I also replaced my old psu (Enlight 450W) with Corsair CX600 and those 2 components cost me alot here in my country (Indonesia)

 

If someone could just explain to me about that clicking sound is it normal or is it bad then maybe I will try to OC my PC much higher, based on guidance from people here at Overclockersclub.

Have to disagree on that, I use to convert a lot of videos and every 100 MHz increase would shorten the time it would take and if it's free why not go for it.

I find video converting not a "daily compute use" kind of situation, that is just a work kind of situation, just my three cents though :)

Yes, I'm a motion graphics designer, I need all the processing power I can get lol,

 

I'm trying to save some cash to replace my Athlon X4 with FX 6300

 

Btw here are some screenshot of my overclocked Athlon, are these readings ok? No over voltage etc?

If you were to upgrade, go for an Intel platform - it is so much faster for rendering than AMD, it is not even funny anymore lol

Yes, I have to admit that Intel is waaaay better than AMD in terms of processing power.

 

AM3+ platform is dead in the water aaaaand I just bought that Asrock mobo last week *dang

 

Well, I guess I have to save some more money to switch platform for a new mobo and proc.
