How many cores?

Recommended Posts

I just ran prime 95 to test cpu at normal, and ran Hard Ware monitor to check the thermals.

Hardware monitor seems strange. The old AMD cpu would show 4 cores.

This CPU shows two cores. (i7-4790K).

Temperatures

             Core #0 47C

             Core#1  47C

             Package 47C

The device manager shows 8 cores and the MSConfig Boot Advanced shows 4 cores.

Any chance you guys can tell me what is happening here please?

Core temp ver 1 says 2 cores and 4 threads.

Process Explorer says 2 cores.

Something is not right here.

Google has some things to say about it. One was de-lid  but I don't see why this should help.

Another was re-seat the CPU. This might work but I want some expert input first. Please!

Delidding would only help you with temp issues and if you do it will void any warranty, you could try reseating the cpu as it's possible some of the pins aren't connecting .Did you try to update the mb to the latest bios.

Some things here are bugging me: I changed my sig, but it wont update. Something is wrong with the website, I think. (My settings)

Asus Z97 Pro gamer/ 16GB Geil Ram at 1600mhz/ Asus Strix 980 watercooled/ i7-4790K watercooled/ SSD, 1tbhdd.

My son's rig is the same. I changed my CPU with his, and he had no change. His CPU in my rig still shows 2 cores. So can't be pins. (MoBo problem.) [Or BIOS problem]

Dan's BIOS is 0501. My Bios is 0401. (my mobo is newer than his, but bios looks older) When I looked at Asus website earlier, neither of these two Bios's are shown on their website. (please check)

I have thought of updating to latest, which is 2106. But don't want to do that until you people can give me some feedback.

Also, if the MoBo has to be returned to seller, maybe I should talk to seller and see if they want me to try an update. What do you think?

Does Task Manager show the four cores? What about in the BIOS?

Task manager shows 2 cores. Process explore shows 2 cores. Core temp shows 2 cores.

Okay, just checked ASUS support again and found some BIOS stuff.

My BIOS, 0401 is for the B85 CPU. (WTF) Never heard of that CPU.

Asus now shows a 2401 as the latest BIOS for the Z97 pro. I wonder if the Pro is different from Pro gamer?

I'll download it to my rig in case I use it.

So many damned asus pages with so many different BIOS's.

Spike: I'm going to try flashing to BIOS 2106. (for Z97 pro gamer) It is one day newer than 2401.

I downloaded BIOS 2401, thinking it was the latest. It is for Pro Wi-fi dated 27 May 2015.

Numbers are confusing. Gotta use dates.

Updated BIOS to 2106 and nothing changed. Still only two cores. RMA? Maybe?

the asus website stats you must install the new vga drivers from there website for full compatibility. you want to install Version 10.18.14.4206 under vga

http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z97PRO_GAMER/HelpDesk_Download/

there is a link to your board and os is windows 7 64 bit.  the driver you need should be under vga. if you click on the link then click on the cpu supported list you'll see where it says you need the newest vga driver also make sure you have the newest chipset also.

Major problems surfaced last night.

Blue screen for one second, memory says 16GB but 256 MB usable. GTX 980 disabled because it reported problems.

Caphowdy, I tried to use your link but the download got to the windows 8 OS then stopped.

Gotta try again now, while I'm on the net. If I can't do it, I will probably have to re-install OS.

Oh yeah, got 8 gig ram in my old AMD rig. Gotta test Ram.

I don't know if this is allowed, but if anybody can offer major help, please use my email as well as here. I can access that on son's computer.

When I changed the CPU for Dan's CPU I may have upset some hardware in the rig. Just saying!

Spike, thanks for the reply. Caphowdy got it right. I was able to install the vga driver from ASUS and the chipset driver from ASUS.

It didn't want to do it for a while. (System requirements were not met)

But Dan was fiddling with it while I dusted the house. He got them installed and I have 8 cores, and the video card is working properly.

I also have all my RAM back. It was a driver problem obviously in hindsight.

Got a lot of help from you guys lately. Thank you all.
