GPU Overclock issue

Recommended Posts

Hello , so i've tried to overclock my gpu and for some reason i am getting worse results , any idea why is this happening ?

My gpu is this one http://www.amd.com/en-us/products/graphics/desktop/7000/7990

Custom clocks : 1000 core clock , 1500 memory clock , 0% power

Overclocked settings : 1100 core clock , 1575 memory clock , for power ive tried both 0% and 20% and makes no difference , still worse benchmark result .

Here you can see both screenshots , 12085 score at stock http://i.imgur.com/hkxZnyD.jpg , and 9411 overclocked . http://i.imgur.com/a3V7tn0.jpg

For overclocking ive tried both catalyst center and msi afterburner , still no difference , same negative results , i have also tried to do a clean reset of drivers using safe mode and then re-installing drivers but still did not fix the issue

Something i just notice is that no matter how much i change my core , it sticks to a limit of 950 even under a benchmark test but it does affect the benchmark results cause i am getting worse benchmarks , Why is this happening ? Heres some screenshots:

System specs :

Ram : Team vulcan -2133 16gb     2133mhz  XMP profile

Motherboard : Gigabyte Z87X-OC

GPU : Amd radeon hd 7990 6gb

SSD : Samsung ssd 840 series

Power supply : Corsair tx850

I'm not familiar with AMD cards, but I am curious about this 'power' setting you mentioned. Is it like an 'overboost' power thing? IE = 0% = 100% and 10% = 110%?

You need to pay attention to your voltage for your GPU. If your GPU can't get enough voltage to OC itself, it will most likely not make the jump.

Before I flashed the bios of my GPU to unlock power & voltage settings, I had a really hard time to get 1300mhz core clock. It would never stay there for very long, and always downclock itself back to 1250, or 1200. In my personal case it was a voltage and power (TDP) issue.

Maybe check out some posts of poeple with the same card as you and whether they posted they Afterburner settings, then you could try those out as a reference. (If you didn't do that already)

Cheers,

I also noticed something quite bizarre.

You seem to have 3 GPUs listed in your results. (Including the Intel HD Graphics that is)

  1. AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series
  2. Intel® HD Graphics 4600
  3. AMD Radeo HD 7900 Series

That seems a bit weird to me.

Yea thats how it looks like , 3 gpus for some reason , and i only have 1 , The intel one i assume might be some kind of drivers but never really gave it thought since never had an issue , as for why theres 2   7900 , no idea about that . About the power , theres some voltages to increase the gpu and it goes up to a maximum of +20% power , for overclocking , Ive done research on that and usually people use that on maximum when overclock so theres no problem on that i guess

So even at '20% extra power & voltage' when you run the benchmark you get worse results? Track your GPU clock while running the benchmark, does it peak at it's max rate and stay there? Or is it jumping up and down?

And as WarWeeny said, what are you temps like when benchmarking?

Yes even at +20% power i still get worse results , My gpu clock its up to 950mhz during graphics and combined test , at Physics test it drops down to 501 as well as when i am doing nothing on pc ,  My temps are really good , like 54 max or so , i have watercooling for gpu

OK, that's quite bizarre. As for the physics test is mainly CPU driven so that's not abnormal that it drops (not sure it should go back to idle state though).

How long have you had the card? Maybe write a ticket to AMD and see if this could be faulty unit?

If it works with afterburner, you should get more direct access to the card's power/voltage. But I saw you mentioned you tried that too. /shrug

Some minor things that you might have already checked. Are your PCI-E power cables properly connected? Maybe just double check if they are snapped in? (Digging ze bottom of ze barrel... soreh)

One other thing. Was this a DIY waterblock installation? Or did it come factory fitted? Don't want to be a prophet of doom or anything, but maybe you squeezed or pressed some resistance/chip/thingy when you did it? /i have no idea.

I did try to contact them and they suggested to do a clean uninstall in safe mode and then re-install , i did so but dint fix the issue , and yea i bought the pc with everything already installed from factory and ive checked for cables everything perfect . And i have the gpu for about one and a half year now

Your 7900 is a dual GPU card,.. when overclocking using Catalyst Control Center are you applying exact same OC to both GPU's,.. under Performance tab when you type in your OC then you need to hit top 7900 drop down tab and click on second GPU and apply same OC.

Almost looks like your only overclocking one GPU with those benchmark resualts,.. your card should handle the bump your doing fine with no Vcore adjustment.

Am i missing something ? I dont understand how to oc both. Heres how catalyst control center looks like :
