Z97 needed! I got it! And the 4790K!

Recommended Posts

I have the Asus Z97 Pro Gamer and i7 4790K. I was hoping to see the BIOS without building the rig.

Dan (son) has the same mobo with the same CPU. His BIOS is 0501.

According to Asus that BIOS only supports the Pentium G3460 CPU with this mobo. All other CPU's have 0202 with this mobo.

The BIOS support for the 4779K is 0202.

That stuff is what I found out.

I know this is a popular CPU so what are people on this forum, and other forums, using as their BIOS?

Asus support has a 2106 BIOS that states " *Full support of the new CPU requires VGA driver version 10.18.14.4206 or later "

Don't know what your asking, but you won't see what version bios is installed until you build it, most likely if you just bought it it should have close to the newest bios ! If it don't have the right bios you can't flash it unless it's booting ! Also that vga full support thing just applies if you are using the cpu's video, not an external video card, so you can update that after the rig is running.

Spike: Ok, thanks! Gotta build it first. Wont know my BIOS till later.

Ivy: Confused you, sorry!

Waco/jdm: Dans rig boots and runs fine. But ... a big but ... His BIOS is 0501. According to Asus website that BIOS is recommended for ONLY a Pentium G3460 CPU in the Asus Z97 Pro gamer.

Dan's rig is Asus pro gamer and i74790K. his Bios is 0501. Asus website says it should be 0202.

My question is do users of this combo update their BIOS, or leave it alone.

Edit: Spike: I just realized what you meant. (Which is don't update to 2106 if a discrete card is used). (I think)

My Asus Formula  Z97 board had BIOS 0501 installed from factory and I'm running i7-4790K,..  https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_VII_FORMULA/HelpDesk_CPU/

The 0501 is newer BIOS version and includes 0202 chipset instructions plus some updates,.. if 0501 is factory installed when you boot your new Z97 Pro Gamer I would leave it,.. and not flash to lower 0202 version.

The BIOS revisions can get a bit interesting with ASUS boards. The newer UEFI BIOS sometimes have a lower number. The best idea is to look at the BIOS Revision date over all else to know if you have the latest. The most current BIOS is 2106 with a date of 5/28/2015http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z97PRO_GAMER/HelpDesk_Download/ and features a host of improvements over the 0501.

I get it now! If mine is 0501 I will leave it. (if it ain't broke ...)

I'm sure the 2106 is important if you use the on board video. No way I'm gonna do that!

Thanks to all for the help.

I'm going to update the BIOS on the Z97 board prior to installing OS. The download is Z97-PRO-GAMER-2106.zip

Asus Forum says to shorten the name from Z97-PRO-GAMER-ASUS-2106.cap because of an 8 digit limit. True or false?

Also, the Forum is reading as dot ROM not Dot CAP. In the past I used to see where the manual says to change the extension to ROM. The new manual doesn't say that. (Nada!)

Any comments on that please?
