jdm_freek Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 (edited) okay so I bought a new second r9 290 to crossfire but then realized that my PC you was not strong enough being lazy as I am I did not want to tear down my entire systemso I sold both 290's for $450..now I am in the market for a new GPU right now I'm running a pair of 460's and I am Not sure what path to take. the GTX 970 is out of the question unless they fix the 3.5gb issue. I would like to go back to Team Green maybe a pair of 960 tease or a 980 if the price drops within the next couple of months for whatever AMD has up their sleeves comes out soon but I don't think I can wait till June. there needs to be a 12 step program for pc upgrading Edited April 19, 2015 by jdm_freek
IVIYTH0S Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 What do you mean not strong enough? and I just treat the 970 like a 3.5GB card, which is still a great amount of vram. what games are you playing that require the performance? jdm_freek Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 (edited) my current psu is a evga 600b and not even close enogh for 290cf the 970 is a great card but if it says 4gb it should be 4gb i would only go with a 970 if i get a good deal like $225 at the most there is a open box from gigabyte for $263 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125706R but its a short card and i dont know if performance is the same as ref Edited April 18, 2015 by jdm_freek

That card being short won't hurt its performance, as long as it has the clock speeds equal or better than reference then the performance will compare in a proportional manner. So I guess you put both 290s in and it didn't boot or ran poorly? Why not just get a new PSU, I know you said you're lazy but I would have thought that going through the trouble of selling both cards would exceed that of just swapping the PSU. Braegnok Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 (edited) If your planing on running multiple graphic cards,.. the correct path to take would be planing on upgrading your PSU. Edited April 20, 2015 by Braegnok

jdm_freek Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 im not trying to be cheeky but does anyone know if the gtx 960 4gb has the same 3.5gb issue
bp9801 Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Not that I've heard, and even the GTX 970 with its 3.5GB is still more than enough for most games and uses. It is 4GB on a 128-bit bus, so that may limit stuff later on, even with Maxwell's memory efficiency compared to Kepler.
