Possible to OC?

Recommended Posts

I have the AMD FX 8370. I want to overclock, I currently have the asus m5a99fx mobo. Idle Temps 10c and load of 30-31c could I overclock and if so how and how high supposedly?

Welcome to OCC!

What are you using to cool?!? 10c is insanely low and 31c underload is also crazy. I suspect either the sensor is broken or the software your using isn't reading it right.

It would also help to know what cooler you are using and what your load temps are using Prime95

Edit: I think I was getting 33c idle 55c using the stock cooler, but I really don't remember since it was ages ago.

^what they said

But I'm not sure what the max of those FX chips is, I remember the Phenom IIs were like 62C or something but I'm not sure if that limit's higher now, I always say as long as it's not throttling you're not really in any danger of doing any damage thermally... just take care in only providing the voltage necessary for the clock speed you're happy with.

Go for it though!

yeah ivy has it right, generally speaking higher voltage will kill the chip long before the thermals of running it at a high c (is it 60c~ still?) will. At stock voltage the chip will run basically forever.

I believe it is 70c to 72c is the heat limit for most fx chips.
Take that number with a grain of salt, I have seen prebuilt Athlon x2's run over 85c for weeks on end. I feel like amd is fairly conservative when rating max thermals.

4.2 to 4.3Ghz should be easy with that setup but will be cooling dependent. You could start by increasing the clock multiplier and running some stability testing with Prime 95 or LinX using about 80% of the system memory capacity. Once the chip fails the stability testing you would increase the CPU voltage.  I prefer overclocking in the BIOS vs using tools in the OS but they do serve a need. You could also try using AISUITE  and using the auto overclocking feature.
