My budget for hardware is going to be $1,500 - $2,000. Below is what I threw together real quick on newegg. Any input or suggestions is always appreciated. bp9801 Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 You could probably drop down to a smaller PSU if you aren't planning on SLI in the future. Something in the 800-1000W range would suffice, imo. I'm rocking the same SSD, very solid and very fast. Rest of the gear looks good. Wonder which staff people will be next with a new rig. With a 980 I probably won't be doing SLI but would rather have the bigger PSU just in case. Looks like a pretty solid build there Norm! What are you going to do for cooling? An AIO or all air? (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811854006&cm_re=enthoo-_-11-854-006-_-Product) Similar price to the Thermaltake case, but should be higher quality and a bit more options for watercooling. The only thing I don't like about it is the +12v is only 62A. Anyone have any opinions on it compared to the Seasonic? After looking a little closer at my video card options I also see that I could do two GTX 660's or even 760's in SLI for less than the single GTX 980 so any thoughts on 2x660's or 2x760's vs a single 980? Wow so PC Power ad Cooling are now called Firepower...interesting... as for the12V rail, my silencer Gen 1 has the same amount of current capacity (or atleast rated) and I've been great. That unit seems stupidly expensive for what it is though, I'll recommend a unit for ya after I shower lol. If it was much more it wouldn't be a 750W power supply! That in itself, full watts available on the +12V rail, is something that hints at a good power supply. ClayMeow Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 I'm with everyone else - the original PSU you chose is just overkill and money that could be better spent elsewhere...if not on hardware, then on a game to really test your new build. lol. As for the GPU question, I'd always go with the best single-GPU you can afford over an SLI solution. That being said, you're certainly paying a huge premium for a GTX 980 right now. A better value would be the GTX 970 if you're that concerned about over-spending. In the world of computer-building, it's usually best to go one down from the top if you care about bang-for-buck.
