ir_cow Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Look for help getting a router that doesn't overheat. Most of these Wireless N ones have major overheating issues and I need to place a router in a room that gets up to 90F+ in the summer (like now). Currently there is a old Linksys wireless G (one of the first ones out). It's alright but like to lock up often forcing me to hard reset it. It also only has 100mbit ports and the single won't reach the front of the house (too many pipes or walls. It's not super large, 2 floors and 99% wood. I'm looking for a good G or N router that does not overheat even in a hot room and has Gigbit ports. Around $100 is my limit but it's going to be used for the next 10 years, so I can pay more if needed. Thank you.
l1il Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 (edited) Just a suggestion, you could also use a cheap laptop cooler if router temperature is an issue. Depending on where it is located, fan noise would not be an issue I believe. You could cool both the router and the modem. Take note, and by experience, that a good lot of cable modems are getting hot as well, which will compromise it's emitting performance. *EDIT* That'll teach me not to do my research before, as I couldn't find one NOT powered by the USB port... zut.. Nerm Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Might be a little out of your budget and comfort levels but Mikrotik routers perform great in high heat and other poor conditions. At work we use them in our equipment shacks for our WISP towers. They can even be mounted in outdoor enclosures with no air flow, etc and function just fine. ericgcollyer Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Asus RT-N66U. That is the router I always recommend. In my parents house, the router is installed in the attic next to the heating/AC unit. It gets pretty toasty in the room, but they are having no performance issues. Not to mention the router itself is fantastic.
Wesstron Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 I've had a Netgear WNDR3700v2 for over two years now and it performs great so far. Solid wireless range and the new firmware update made the GUI very user friendly. I did a lot of homework before buying it (it was also on sale for $89.99) and it seemed to be the best option back then. I would check for V2 on the packaging as it seems to be a better performer than the V1, V3, and V4. Here is a link that should help if you can pick the units up in a B&M store http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/netgear/wndr3700 . I wouldn't bother with flashing the firmware, the factory one is doing ok as far as I'm concerned. Here is an online link, it's on sale now!! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122326&Tpk=WNDR3700v2

Also the wireless N usually didn't work very often. lucky for me I didn't need to transfer anythign over N. I might buy the 3700 and if it sucks or no better, i'll return it. ericgcollyer Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Most of the reviews I have read say that the n66u overheats with custom firmware installed. I haven't had any issues with the stock firmware (or the merlin firmware for that matter)

For your situation I would probably suggest one like this http://routerboard.com/RB951G-2HnD one. You can find them at most wisp/network equipment dealers (roc-noc.com and streakwave.com are two good ones). I can get them too through work but doubt I could match the prices at either of those places.
ir_cow Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 thank nerm! it looks like my parents only wanted a mainstream brand (should have known). I got the WNDR3700 (v4) today at best buy (same price as newegg). Works great for G but N is lackluster...1-2 bars a room away and G is 4 across the street. I have 15 days to return it, so i'll try to break it before than or keep it another 10 years lol.
Krieg1337 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 The Netgear WNDR3700 is pretty good. My only issue is that a power outage seemed to have wrecked 3 of the 4 ethernet ports. Other than that though, solid performer.
