VaporX Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 The computers at work desperately need upgrading... however the boss is an old woman who likes to fight change... the office still has the same desktops that were purchased when the bussiness was started 11 YEARS AGO! except now theyre running xp (and very slowly might i add) to prove that we need to upgrade, i was wondering if there was a way to manually "fry" or "break" the computer while im sitting here at my desk? all data has been backed up and it will not effect work at all... i just need to prove that we need new computers. Any help would be greatly appreciated Okay first to those suggest ways to actually on purpose break a computer, SHAME ON YOU! Simple logic should be enough to sway this woman if she is at all a competent boss. First explain that over 11 years the technology has not made stepes but leaps forwatd in not just performance but also productivity, reliability and security. Explain that at this age any computer failure would be costly compared to reapirs of newer systems and would have a much lower productivity to cost rations. Also explain that at 11 years these PCS are DUE for major hardware failures and that by replace them now, while they are still running means that productivity could be maintined during the upgrade. However she is livin g on borrowed time and could see a failure that would grind the office to a halt. Make sure you impress upon her this is not about change for chan ges sake or even pure speed upgrades. This is about making sure the office stays fully functional and even improves the overall work being done.

You can shame me all you want but I know what the guy is talking about, I've dealt with people that are just stubborn about computers. We have one customer who is always bringing in his computer for virus clean up and depending on the severity of it we usually just reload the OS, the thing is he won't accept anything other than windows 95 on it. This computer didn't come with or intended to have 95 either, it could run XP just fine but he doesn't want it. Being a good boss and understanding computers just aren't the same thing, that's pretty much the case here I think. I know businessmen that could sell you a car that's been hauling broken used toilets for the past 10 years but they wouldn't even attempt to plus a keyboard and mouse into the back of a computer. BluePanda Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 I am surprised at the fact that you would want to break the computer -- even if your boss didn't really understand why you needed a new one. I agree with all the powerpoint ideas that were thrown out there and the idea of simply showing her how it is affecting how much work you can or can't get done. I can't believe so many OCC members would be so dishonest about something like this.

My boss is retarded in this aspect, we HAVE have had the new computers in boxes for weeks and he has not installed them. WTH. New machines usually mean cooler running (aka lower stress on central HVAC systems), more efficient themselves, sometimes they're smaller, depending on the business some may still use disgusting CRT monitors which cause eyestrain and consume more power than they're worth, and they may equal or exceed the performance of the old system! My boss is retarded in this aspect, we HAVE have had the new computers in boxes for weeks and he has not installed them. WTH. Old machines end up everywhere... hell working for the government is the first place to find some nice old machines. Depending on what you are doing exactly old machines are perfect. Sometimes companies like to have older computers to prevent their employees from doing much more than work. It makes sense really. It's not that I sympathize with old system, though they are fun to work on sometimes, I just can see where there use works if they still work... lol. I get to work on my own computer this summer for my internship because my boss couldn't get licenses sorted out for me to use MATLAB -- which is what I need to use for my entire project (btw GUIs in MATLAB suck!!!) Really just disapointed that breaking a computer was someones first idea -- I agree that is fun too... but I dunno, I'd be afraid I wouldn't get a new one... but perhaps an older one from another office. lol. LuckyDeath Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 The OP mentioned a couple of times this wasn't his first idea... but a last resort as all previous pleas had fallen on deaf ears with his boss. I can sympathize... when you need to edit massive spreadsheets and the workstation is coughing up it's own guts just trying to start up, it really makes it hard to do your job. Unfortunately, managers and supervisors aren't always sympathetic to employee needs. While purposely damaging someone elses property isn't commendable, I can definitely say I've been pushed to that edge before. Luckily, we had an IT guy who persuaded my boss to change the machines out (she listened to a guy because he was in IT, while I had been saying the same thing for a year). Glad to hear you're getting an upgrade. Take good care of it, and make good use of it!
