Here is all the materials your need...(Vent filters and Magnets tapes)

20110301134057.jpg

just tape the tape on the filters

20110301133942.jpg

the magnets hold the filter just fine

20110301134019.jpg

invisible!

20110301135854.jpg

too lazy to cut the filter into the exact size...

20110301134019.jpg

you cant see it right?

finished!!!

Yeah!!! that's it...tell me what you think!=)

Magnets and harddrives do not play well together!

Actually they do. There are very powerful magnets inside your HDD already and nothing short of a high-powered degausser will harm your data.

Just a thought here.

Magnets and harddrives do not play well together!

But, It looks good!

I dont think the magnet tape would affect the HDD at all

since there is a fan much close to the HDD cage and nothing wrong so far...

also the magnet in the fan is much strong too!

I agree with you that the magnetic strip tape probably won't hurt your

harddrive, and while it requires a strong degauser to wipe a harddrive

clean , a much weaker magnetic field could scramble data enough

to cause problems. The point is, the data on your harddrive

is written and changed by a magnetic field, and that a strong enough

magnetic field introduced close to your harddrive will do the same thing.

Would a few pieces of magnetic tape be strong enough? I doubt it.

But, there's always somebody that thinks bigger, or stronger is always

better. How about a nice little rare earth button magnet that sticks itself

to your harddrive instead of to your filter/case when you go

to install the filter? Oops! How much is to much? I dont' know,

and I'd rather not find out the hard way.

Rare earth magnets won't do anything to your HDDs (even the big ones from United Nuclear don't do anything).

How big of a magnet would be considerd dangerous, Waco?

A professional degausser is about the only thing I'd be worried about. Strong neodymium magnets don't even compare. I've played with a 2"x1"x1" n45 neodymium magnet with a 2.5" laptop HDD and a 3.5" desktop HDD - I couldn't get it to do anything at all even when I was trying to get it to corrupt things.

Is there are story behind this? Some top secret information on the HDD causing you to wipe it? Or just playing around?
