PSU fan up or down?

Recommended Posts

I'm building my first PC in over 10 years, so it's like having almost no information compared to today's PCs.

My question is: My PSU fan, up or down? I'm using the Cooler Master HAF X 942 which will have an extra top fan with an additional 80mm fan mounted in the GPU bracket which will being blowing down onto the graphics card (GTX 480).

Thanks in advance for your help.

p.s. I'm using air cooling all the way.

Welcome to OCC shagnat!

Considering the HAF X 942 has the PSU mounted on the bottom, I would probably place the PSU with the fan facing down and drawing air from outside of the case.

There are a few reasons for this:

1) The air under your case is cooler than the air within your case

- This is because firstly no other components have heated the air in the case before reaching the PSU and secondly because hot air rises and cold air falls and hence the lower elevation means colder air will be below your case.

2) Works with natural heat flow

- Like it was said in point one, hot air rises. So instead of drawing hot air down and out of the PSU, it draws it up and out following natural convection.

3) Allows your graphics card + CPU to have more airflow

- The PSU is not drawing away any air from within the case.

4) Case designed that way

- The case is designed to be use this way and therefore has probably been most optimized for this setup

Your top fans will do a good enough job to draw out the hot air from within the case.

Hope that was of help :)

either way do fine...

i prefer the fan facing down becuase that way the fan can blow in the fresh air from outside the case

and then exhale out of the case

Thanks guys. I was thinking the face down would be the way to go, but, wanted to clarify since it's the first time I've built a PC with a PSU mount on the bottom.

Very much appreciate your explanation and time.
