4870 cf power supply

Recommended Posts

I'm looking into upgrading my pc soon, probably with something like these specs:

Phenom ii x2 555BE

4gb ddr3 1600mhz

2x 4870 512mb

I was wondering how much power I would need for 2 4870s and if anyone could reccomend a psu for me?

I ran Quadfire 4870s with my OCZ Z850 without a single hiccup :). I am partial to the single rail PCP&C/OCZ power supplies - they don't get much better. Less worry about balancing loads among multiple heavy load graphics cards.

I also ran dual 4870s with a Corsair TX650 backup PSU I have and I am surprised at its quality for its price. It is also a single rail PSU, with 52A on the 12v.

Amps on the 12v rail are a LOT more important then the advertised watts. Not only are the watts all rated at different temperatures and some PSUs are considerably lower wattage at operating temps, but a cheap "800w" PSU can be made of multiple weak rails that add up to 800w. Adding a power hungry graphics card on a weak rail that is shared by the motherboard can cause all sorts of instability issues even though your total wattage usage is a lot less then what the PSU was rated.
