New Power supply time!.....again : /

Recommended Posts

So my power supply blew (2 weeks old,yay thermaltake!), so I'm in the position, again, of searching for a new one. I've decided that instead of thinking that I can't afford a quality PSU, I can't afford not to get something that will last, and be reliable. That being said, I now am looking for an 750-850w psu in the $150 price range. I've kind of decided on the XFX 850w at this point, but if you have any suggestions as to what I should get, feel free to throw them in here.

Oh, and in case anyone is curious/confused, here is the original post

I was just recording on my computer, when it randomly shutdown. No blue screen, just shuts off. I tried to turn it back on, and all I got was a light flicker, and a high pitched sqeal coming from (I think) the power supply. I'm at a loss as to what to do here, I have no experience fixing computers, just building them (odd, I know). My first inclination is to switch out my psu, and see if it boots up, which I'm going to do now. If you have any ideas, feel free to share your input.

UPDATE: Put in the old PSU, and it booted up. I'll have to do some testing, make sure nothign else is wrong, but at this point, it looks like I blew my PSU.... and it's 2 weeks old...

Yeah, it's the psu

Is it the TR2 series in your sig? if so im not too surprised as the TR2's seem to have some serious reliability issues (had a TR2 750w that literally blew out on me on the 2nd day). Sorry man, blown PSUs suck

Indeed it is.... Maybe I should have sprung for the XFX 750 after all lol. Although, I got it from a buddy who works at best buy, so getting another isn't going to be a problem at all.

I would RMA it, sell the one they send you and pick up this one:

I have used Corsair PSUs in my last 3 builds and all are super stable. The XFX 750 is based on the Seasonic M12D which is also a world class PSU, either would be worth using over the Thermaltake, I think. I have seen a lot of critical praise for Thermaltake, but anecdotal evidence tells a different story.

Here is the kicker. Whenever a power supply fails there is the potential that it can damage another component in the process. I wouldn't risk another TR2. If possible get a refund and put that money towards a Corsair unit.

Just my two cents worth.

If you have the money, definitely pick on up. Highly recommend it. I love mine, no problems whatsoever.
