El_Capitan Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 So, the fan on the Corsair HX 1000W was getting a little loud (I replace just about all my noisy fans with Noctua NF-P12/P14's and/or put them on either 5v or 7v), so I decided to replace it with a Noctua NF-P14 at 5v. 1. Once you remove the screw with the tape over it that says "Warranty void if removed", the warranty is void. Now, what's funny was that the screw that was under it looked like it was already removed once before, and not by me. I bought it at Newegg... makes me wonder. 2. The fan that's in the Corsair HX 1000W is a 140mm Yate Loon D14BH-12 (L-SSS); DC 12V 0.70A. Not a great fan, but does its job. 3. The Noctua fan I soldered is a 12v 0.10A... which happens to not start the fan when the computer turns on. 4. I instead solder to ground and the +12v line1 with the 12v to 5v wire. It's now nice and quiet, and the PSU is better cooled. 5. WORD OF WARNING! In case anyone ever decides to do the same. Since I could not utilize the 12v .70A that the fan was using on the thermal control board, if the temps go up, that means my fan speed won't go up, either. So, just keep your PSU temps monitored or be sure to use a great fan like the Noctua NF-P14. A scratch, a lost screw, and a jolt to my senses (ALWAYS UNPLUG THE POWER CORD ON THE PSU BEFORE WORKING ON IT!) occurred during this mod. I hope I'm still alive in the morning. iskout Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 If you die, can I have one of your rigs?
El_Capitan Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 No. I'm taking them with me to the afterlife.
alexonfyre Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 No. I'm taking them with me to the afterlife. I hear ambient temps in the afterlife are less than -50C, so can I just get a few of your fans?
iskout Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 I hear ambient temps in the afterlife are less than -50C, so can I just get a few of your fans? Lol. Seriously, though, I hope you don't die, El_Capitan. You're one of my favorite posters

El_Capitan Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Thanks, I feel much better about dying now... though the temps I hear where I'm going are close to that of Nvidia GPU's.
alexonfyre Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Thanks, I feel much better about dying now... though the temps I hear where I'm going are close to that of Nvidia GPU's. The reason is that nvidia chips actually channel the power of SATAN for stream processing bandwidth

iskout Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 I rofl'd at the nVidia GPU comment. Or.. The ambient temperature is -50c, but are not allowed to overclock
paulktreg Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 I'd be very careful! The Yate Loon is 140CFM and the Noctua only 65CFM that's one hell of a difference in airflow through the power supply. If the Yate Loon's noisy it's speed must be ramping up a little because the temperatures rising and you must be pulling a few watts? It's all very well being quiet but if the airflow isn't there then I'd leave the Yate Loon in.
Puck Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Even unplugged a PSU can hold surprising amounts of voltage in the caps for quite some time. Just a word of warning
