Alexandre Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 (edited) Hello venomoc. I would suggest you see how much power your system will need using this power supply calculator, double the wattage it gives you and then look for a good power supply at that (doubled) wattage. This way the power supply will be loaded at approximately 50% which is where power supplies are most efficient (usually between 40% - 60% load). Thus you will have less fan noise, better efficiency (waste less power) and have more headroom for future upgrades. I am of the opinion that the power supply is the most important part of your computer and you should ensure that you invest in a good one. EDIT: If you want to learn more about PSUs check out this article: Everything You Need to Know About Power Supplies Edited December 31, 2010 by Alexandre
dihartnell Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 asus m4a89td-pro-usb3 am3 x6 1055t 8gbkit(2x4) 1333 gskil 2tb hdd samsung ati radeon 6850 msi lg blu ray combo drive noctua se14 cooler this leaves me stuck choosing a psu, i had a look at the antec sonata 3, and it comes with a 500w psu as you may know, will this suffice or should i buy case and psu separate? i dont have big money to spend but ive looked into the gigabyte ODIN 720W coupled with the aerocool rs9 That case and PSU will work ok, but not much in the way of cable management so will be a bit of an untidy build. davidst Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Yes but don't add anything else. And remember the hotter a PS gets the lower it's output.

paulktreg Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 The Antec 500W will be more than enough for a single 6850. Reviews suggest somewhere around 250~300W from the wall on high end i7 systems so you shouldn't have any problems. If you intend going crossfire in the future then a new PSU would be needed. Alexandre Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 (edited) thanks but i can only get stuff from msy, and after revising ill get the antec 300 and a vantec ION2+ 600W, getting both for $128 AU Do you know about the quality of the vantec ION2+ 600w supply? I couldn't find many reviews on it on the net which doesn't necessarily say much about its performance but it doesn't hurt to be sure before you buy. EDIT: For an extra $41 it's probably worth getting a more tested and tired PSU like the Corsair TX-650 which is on the OCC Recommended Power Supply list and has good reviews (here's one). That way you don't buy a potentially bad power supply which could shorten the lifespan of your hardware and cause problems for your system further down the road. paulktreg Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 ill have a look into it, but freinds have bought the vantec and it has done the job for them, my problem is cash mabe i should wait a little longer save a bit more and get a more recognised and certified psu. i wont add any extra gpu's so crossfire shouldnt be an issue The Earthwatts 500W that comes with the case will be OK. It's not a bad power supply, it's on the OCC recommended list and it's 80 Plus so what more could you ask for? Have a look at the reviews on the 6850W and see how little power they really require, you'll find it somewhere between 225~275W. It will save you the money and the PSU work at an acceptable lvl. He knows more than me about PSUs so his advice is probably the way to go.
