wevsspot Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 (edited) Since I've got little grandkids running around the house all of the time now, I needed to protect curious little fingers from the fans on my externally mounted MCR220 Drive Series Rad/Res/Pump. I could have just put fan guards on I guess, but I got motivated and decided to completely reconfigure my watercooling setup instead of taking the easy way out. Parts used; 2x140mm stock LianLi fans Black Ice GT 240 Stealth Radiator XSPC Dual Bay Reservoir Swiftech MCP655-B Pump Swiftech Apogee XT (already had so re-used) The first order of business was moving the 2x140 fans from the top exterior of the case to the top interior of the case. Not much hassle here other than it being a tight fit. That almost made enough room height wise to squeeze the radiator between the top of the case and the top bezel, but not quite because I wanted to re-use the original screws and rubber insulator grommets to hold the 140mm fans in place. So that left me about 1/8" shy of fitting the radiator between the case and bezel. So out came the trusty jig saw and dremel. I removed the slotted fins from the top of the bezel. That exposed the radiator and gave me enough height to finsih the job. I didn't take photos along the way, but I did get some snap shots of the finished product before final cleaning and polishing. Here are the results; Edited November 6, 2010 by wevsspot
El_Capitan Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Looks spiffy! I like how you fit the rad at the inside top, looks so much better than having it on the outside, doesn't it? The XSPC Dual Bay Reservoir looks nice, too. Can't wait to try it on mine.
GabrielT Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 I was thinking of doing the same thing with my K58 but with a thicker radiator because no rad will fit under that top grate. I think a 2.25 inch rad would look nice sticking out of the to a bit.
wevsspot Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 I almost went with a little thicker radiator too, because I agree with you, it would look pretty cool protruding from the top just a little bit. In the end I settled on the Black Ice because I was fond of the color El Capitan - you'll love the dual bay. It is pretty darn sweet. And, thanks for buying that MCR Drive Series from me. That help offset my cost a little bit. I appreciate it!
napster2142 Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 (edited) hello hope i'm still not late to reply on this thread wevsspot i'm wondering how u attach the 240mm radiator on the top because this casing using 140mm fan on top, hope u can explain it to me p/s:using same casing as yours thanks Edited June 29, 2011 by napster2142
wevsspot Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 Move the two 140mm fans from the top of the case to the inside of the case (they can be mounted in either location). Decide whether you want the fans to push or pull. In my configuration I've actually got the fans pushing air from inside the case, through the radiator and then out the top. For the actual mounting of the radiator.... it is just set on top of the case frame and secured into place with the top cover. No fancy mounts or brackets. Here's a pic. showing the fans moved to the inside of the case;
napster2142 Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 nice one bro, thanks at 1st u're panning to use Swiftech MCR220 right?but why change it to Black Ice GT 240 Stealth Radiator? i'll buy Swiftech MCR220 soon and this radiator is thicker than GT 240 and i'm most wondering now about the hubs, because its wider than GT 240 and afraid doesn't suit the 2 pre-holes on the top of the casing. so,in your opinion, does the MCR220 fit nicely with this casing? (after modding the hazel)
wevsspot Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 Not sure Napster. I specifically used the Black Ice because after measuring I knew for sure that it would fit without having to do a lot more trimming on the top bezel. With the Black Ice all I needed to remove were the vent slots, so it was an easy cut, sand and paint. If I had used a thicker radiator I would have had to make some more complex cuts and trims in the bezel. Regarding just the hole placement for the hoses, I believe that the pre-cut holes would accommodate most inlet/outlet barbs of any radiator. Here are a few more pictures after the case was painted;
napster2142 Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 wow,as expected man,u've painted it white,i also planning to do so nice work done there! i just realized at your 1st post,i can see "the gray thing" on the top hazel, what is it?its like size of the radiator is smaller than the space provided after the cutting and u try to fit it nicely,am i right? Swiftech MCR220 dimension is 284 x 128 x 34 mm while Black Ice is 277 x 133 x 29.60 mm,so ST is a bit longer and thicker,so,in my opinion its still need to remove the fin only,no need to adjust others,i think u know what i mean. wevsspot Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 The "gray" piece is a filler. I cut out all of the vent slots and that left a slightly longer hole than the radiator would fill. Another option would be to leave two vent slots at the front and not use a filler. I made my filler out of an old 5.25" front bay cover. It looks grey because it was sanded down in prep for primer and paint at that point.

napster2142 Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 as expected the cutting should provide enough space for 240mm radiator, okay bro, thanks for all the information, starting to use WC system if i'm using cooler master haf-x,its should not be any problem for me,but dont want to spend more bucks for casing
