thomasg76 Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 I am building my own system and i am still swaying between getting an i7 860 or an i7 930. I wanna use the system to mainly do pictures and edit HD Video, but i am also very tempted to put a nive Graphics card in to be able to game. So far i have these two setups. My budget is 2500 A$ i7 930 Setup: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB ST31000528AS CoolerMaster GX 750W PSU Pioneer BDR-205 Blu-ray Disc Writer OEM CoolerMaster HAF 922 Case Intel Core i7 930 LG E2340V 23inch Widescreen LED Monitor XFX ATI Radeon HD5870 Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Motherboard Rev2.0 G.Skill Ripjaws F3-12800CL8T-6GBRM (3x2GB) DDR3 or Corsair XMS2 CL8 TR3X6G1600C8G Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM TOTAL 2361 A$ For this build i read a lot of reviews of the mother board and memory and heard heps of pros and cons. it seems the UD3R is quite picky with memory. So i am not a 100% sure about the mobo. Also i am not a 100% sure about the monitior as i am not a big fan of LG. Alternative i was looking at the Samsung P2350, th enicer thing on the lg is that it is LED rather than LCD. ANyone eny expirience with it ? i7 860 setup: XFX ATI Radeon HD5870 CoolerMaster HAF 922 Case LG E2340V 23inch Widescreen LED Monitor Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB ST31000528AS CoolerMaster GX 750W PSU Pioneer BDR-205 Blu-ray Disc Writer OEM Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3R Motherboard G.Skill Ripjaws F3-12800CL8D-4GBRM (2x2GB) DDR3 Intel Core i7 860 Total :2178 A$ This build saves a couple of hundred Dollars but i am worried when i wanna upgrade and maybe run Sata3 and USB3 at some stage it will impact the system performance. WHich platform is better to overclock ? Any comments welcome thanks
cjloki Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 i have to say that while i'm personally partial to the i7 860, it sounds like for your purposes you'd be better served by an i7 930 1366/x58 setup....video rendering and editing goes better with more power pushing it along .... thomasg76 Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Yeah most review i did read the 930 was ahead in encoding videos and applications compared to the 860/870 and the main reason why i was also leaning more towards is that the price diff is not that big and there is no bottleneck from the PCIe side. anyone has any expirience bewteen the two. thomasg76 Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 Read a few more reviews and it seems the 870 beats the 920 and probably the 930 in a single GPU setup due to teh better turbo. . now i still don't know :-(

Seems though the 870 performs quite well

The price difference is less than that in NZ. I would have thought in Australia it would have been maybe $85 diff.
thomasg76 Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Ok i think i got my final build (nearly) XFX ATI Radeon HD5870 Intel Core i7 930 Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB HD103SJ Pioneer BDR-205 Blu-ray Disc Writer OEM Samsung P2350 23 Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Motherboard Rev2.0 Corsair HX-750 Power Supply Leadtek WinFast DTV2000DS Dual HD Tuner OCZ PC3-12800 Platinum 3x2GB OCZ3P1600LV6GK Lian Li Lancool Dragon Lord PC-K62R1 I decided to go with the Lang Li case. Looks very sleek and red. Changed the Power SUpply to something nice and modular. The only thing i am not a 100% sure yet is the Memory and the Monitor. Read a review of the OCZ memory and they were able to overclock it to nearly 1800. Of course its 50A$ more than the GSKill. For that money i could actually get a 16000 Memory from gskill like the F3-16000CL9T-6GBTD or F3-16000CL9T-6GBRH which supposingly should leave me enough room for overclocking and upgrades. The other thing is the Monitor LED lg or stay with quality thats known the Samsung ? Ah and i also changed my drive to teh Spinpoint form WD. I haven't assembled a system in years, should i let the shop do it or do it myself ?

Ok i wouldn't say i forgot. The last one i assembled though was a PII 233 :-( I am more afraid of roasting something by using the wrong power plug hehe. thomasg76 Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 The other thing i have just read is that Intel will be ditching 1156 and 1366 and bringing a new processor generation out that is incompatible. This won't happen though unitl late this year for 1156 and late next year for 1366. Is it worth the wait ?

Yes you may see new stuff this year or you will see reviews and not being sold unti Q1 its hard to say. But yes everything we all currently have now is being replaced come Q4 or Q1.
