Computer on top or bottom of desk?

I have mine under the desk but it's on a wooden stand that I built. It's raised up about 6 inches and it really helps with the dust. Also make sure you vacuum (with a good vacuum that doesn't just kick up dust) or sweep the floors it's not carpet.

I got mine on a table I built next to my desk that I could slide my guitar amp under, put both my computers and XBOX 360 on top of and hide all the wires behind a cavity I built in the back shoved up against the plug in with all the power and cable and ethernet coming out. Thank god for KVM switches and zip ties. :thumbs-up:

Mac sits on top of the desk, and the Windows PC is under the desk where I can kick it easier.

And if it doesn't, you can use dryer sheets... it'll prevent dust, keep it static free, and leave the inside of your computer with an april fresh sent.

Now that's a great idea - now I'm wondering where to get black dryer sheets 'cause I don't want white orbs emanating blue light from the front of my 900 case.

 

My Opinion:

BOTTOM

Pros

* cooler airflow (lower in the room, cooler air)

* PC noise further from head

* further distance for heat to rise/dissipate before getting to home thermostat (see TOP - Cons for further explanation)

Cons

* more dust

* longer cable-runs (typically)

* restricted PC access (side panel, ODD trays, buttons, cables, etc.)

 

TOP

Pros

* the converse of the all Cons listed above

* PC lighting more visible

Cons

* the converse of the all Pros listed above

* less desk room (for laptops, additional monitors, large mousepad, lava lamp, Bawls, etc)

* noise/vibration through the desk

* closer to thermostat

 

(when I have my rig on top, it's only ~2ft from the thermostat controlling the whole 2nd floor of the house. I already have complaints from the kids & old lady about the temp upstairs - too hot in the summer and too cold during the winter. If your thermostat is in your cave - you get this. It's 10x worse if its anywhere close to the thermostat.)

 

I greatly prefer having my rig on TOP of my desk. Many things can be done to mitigate the consequences of noise and vibration, but if you have more than 1 machine in a closed room you have transformed that room to the hottest one in the home. Thermostat in the room, you've compounded that problem through the rest of the home. Mine is currently UNDER the desk. With pets & carpet I am in constant battle with dust on and in my rig, MONTHLY! (Dust-Off loves me now) One thing to note, and I don't personally believe it's unrelated -- I've noticed an increased failure rate of components since the move down - it's gotta be the dust...

 

Needless to say, I'm looking for an effective filtering solution, one that isn't too airflow-restrictive. The multi-layer, removable screens in the Antec 902 come to mind - anybody know where I can pick those up for various fan sizes? I have tried other (foam cartridge) filter solutions, though the plastic cartridges are too big (thick) to be of any use, and when I remove the plastic frame there isn't enough support for the filter to prevent it from being sucked into (or pushed away from) the fan. In short I'm looking at some sort of support for the filter element or a semi-rigid filter media.

 

This whole dust problem is starting to make me consider my first liquid cooled rig for my next full build. (which would probably alleviate both the majority of the dust problem AND possibly allow me to move the rig back to the TOP of the desk, where I can display my geekness proudly!)

For a possible solution, head to your local hardware store and look for some furnace or air conditioner filters. You can pick them up for cheap and cut them down to the size to fit the fans. I haven't personally used it myself but I know a few people who use them. I will before long soon as I can find some decent ones.

I used to have it on my desk back in college because there was no room under my desk and I really prefer it on the floor. Having a giant case right next to your face is a total pain.

How about pantyhose for a filtering solution. You could even get black for your Antec 900.

I actually have a stand for my computer about 30cm high. It works quite well. It's out of the way, gets good air, and is safe from dust on the floor.
