First Time O/c (need Help Doing It)

Recommended Posts

Hi, well this is my first post on this website. I have a Intel Q6600 CPU and i just found out that i could make it go even faster (O/C) i only found out about that about 1 or 2 weeks ago. Well yeah this guy explained to me over a game (Nitto) for 2 hours how to do it but i got to sceard after hearing "it can burn your CPU". Well a week later i (now) i want to O/C it but i dont know how to do it all i know is i have to acces the BIO's. So i looked up on google "how to overclock a Q660 and i saw this website and thought there might be some nice people that could help me out. Well if you could help me please do this is my first computer and i want to overclock it (i'll explain why later). The following is what i have in my tower (that i know of) i can take a pic of the tower if that helps out. I dont have any cooling upgrades just a couple of fans.

Intel Q6600

GigaByte EP35C-DS3R motherboard

4GB DDR2 RAM

Thanks for looking.

First of all Welcome to OCC.

As for your OC the first thing your going to want to do is download coretemp. Because you are using a stock cooler you will not be able to OC as much as you could with a decent Heatsink. To start off go into your BIOS and find a thing that says something like PCI-E speed, Make sure you set this to 100. Then you will want to find the FSB and raise it in increments of say 5. Because of your cooler after each time you raise the FSB check out your load and idle temps. If they aren't to bad you can go and increase the FSB again. If and when you get a better cooler you can increase the FSB untill your system is unstable. You will then need to increase the voltages. IF i were you i wouldn't do more then increase the FSB untill you get a better cooler. As for your ram timings I wouldn't worry about them to much because you will only be doing a simple OC. One more thing some gigabyte boards need you to hit a key combinantion in order to get the advanced BIOS features, I believe it is ctrl f1. Once you have a FSB you are happy with you will need to fine the Memory mutliplier(called different things depending on MOBO). Basically all you have to do is set this to times X so that X times the FSB is as close to your RAM speed as possible. Simply put say you have some ddr2 (800) and you manage to get your FSB to 400. you will set the memory multiplier to 2 and it will be 2 times the FSB making your memory the correct speed. Sometimes you will not be able to get your RAM to run at the correct speeds, and on AMD this step is not needed at all.

Good luck and feel free to ask any questions.

This is a very simple explanation of how if you need more detail just ask.

I wouldn't worry about frying your CPU. You basically need to be trying to kill it in order for it to actually die. Just don't increase the voltages to much. :D

As for the PIC it probably wouldn't help but it's always nice to see the inside's of peoples rigs. :D

I would suggest absorbing all the info on here like a sponge so to speak, I myself began the journey like you are now. Information that have been proven and tried is abundant here. Enjoy the read and for the sake of your cpu and wallet, I hope you do read through it more than ten times till you are comfortable of making changes on your bios. Aloha!!!
