L1t3 Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 I built my computer(specs in sig) last year and didn't look into overclocking it until now so I'm relatively new to this. Please forgive me if I sound too nub. I've been reading up on all the guides I could find and was able to determine the limit of my cpu, which is [email protected], but I've run into problems overclocking the memory. Although it passes memtests, it just refuses to run stable in windows at any settings above stock specs DDR400 2-2-2-5. The package says it should be able run at 2.5-3-3-7 for DDR550 but when I set it to that while underclocking everything else windows wouldn't even last pass the login screen. I've tried loosening the timings, turning up the vdimm to 2.9(even though it shouldn't be needed according to threads I've read), and trying other various configs such as the ones listed in this thread, which uses the exact same memory I have. Nothing I do seems to be making it any more stable. I've read that the problem could be either a poor memory controller or faulty RAM. I would rather hope I was doing something wrong? Is there something I'm not doing or going about the wrong way? Thanks in advance for the replies.
tasr Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 When you ran memtest on those RAM how did you test? I like to test like this. Enable memtest in the BIOS and test’s #5 and #8 for 15-20 passes each. Then do all tests for 20 passes. These are at stock settings with a low FSB and mem divider at 1/1. This should rule out the memory being bad. Have you tryed a mem divider yet? So I guess the problem is with the motherboard? Have you tryed a mem divider yet? What do you mean?
L1t3 Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 After testing both sticks separately I have found that one appears to run stable at its rated DDR550 2.5-3-3-7 timings while unfortunately the other one doesn't. So it looks like I got a defective stick. Extremely disappointing for a $250(at the time) purchase makes me wish I went OCZ instead. At LEAST I have had absolutely no problems running at DDR400 since I installed them. RMA'ing them is not an option for me so I'm probably just going to replace them. Any suggestions for reliable replacements from newegg? I've been looking at these but they're a little pricey. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820227210

Gskill has a very superior lifetime warranty, I am sure if you make the call/send an email to tech support you will find a friendly ear. i had some Gskill that didn't perform the way I expected, darned if they didn't take it back and send me a pretested set, and they were absolutely luvly:rolleyes: so, the point of this postage is to kick you in the butt to do the RMA, ya never know what you will get back. laterz

I will probably RMA them just not now.
