Spunkmeyer6 Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Ok I finally got fed up with my vidcards heatpipe heat exchanger getting in the way of my ram slots and cpu cooler, especially now I've got a Ninja Plus... Yes it's the size of a real Ninja I'd looked into using the second slot ( PCIE 3 ) before but the manual says not to do it whereas the printing on the circuit boards seems to say it's ok at 8x. It's only a 7600 GT so 8x wouldn't be a problem. I thought I read a thread previously on here about an sli mod but didn't want to void my board this early anway, I also remember something about special drivers. Anyway I took the plunge and moved the jumpers thinking if it doesn't boot I'll move it back or have to settle for 2x. It booted fine but one section of Everest says there is nothing in PCIe3 Motherboard/Chipset/Southbridge Field Value PCI Express Controller PCI-E x16 port #0 Empty PCI-E x1 port #1 Empty PCI-E x1 port #2 Empty PCI-E x2 port #3 Empty But I found this in another section Dipslay/Gpu tab Field Value Bus Type PCI Express x16 @ x8 Is there something else I could test it with? Thanks in advance
Guest SPQQKY Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 It's 2x if the first PCI-E x16 slot is occupied, otherwise, I believe it is 8x with the jumpers.
SpursIndonesia Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 You HAVE to either softmod the MoBo driver and use a specific version of ForceWare, or hardmod the NF4 Ultra chipset into NF4 SLI. Either way, Google is your bestfriend regarding this 'backdoor' solution to your need. I hope my post is not one of the taboo in this forum. If so, please just delete them. Thanx. ikjadoon Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 Nah, can't be taboo. DFI Street actually has a How-To guide, I think, for doing this. This was on the S939 boards, but it should be identical. ~Ibrahim~
john38119 Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 Anyway to make both slots x8 ?
Spunkmeyer6 Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 I've downloaded the correct modded drivers I think but haven't had a chance to install as yet. Seems the writing on the board is correct and you can have them both at 8x by moving the jumpers. Wonder why they try and scare you off from doing it in the manual?? RGone Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 They are trying to make it clear that two video cards will not work in that board...So they just say keep the video cards out of the lower slot...put two cards in and you will see it not boot...the chipset does 'not' work the same when it is being used with the AM2 as it did when it was used on the NF4 Ultra-D boards... soulfly Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 Anyway to make both slots x8 ? err... via on-board jumper? it was printed on the board itself
aspevacek Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 I will say it does work. Not to say anyone is wrong. I am sure for leagle reasons and the board being marketed as an NF4 Ultra chipset and not SLi. Here is a link to my 3D Mark 05 score running the UltraII with 2 7900GT KO cards installed. By the score I am inclined to belive it is functioning as a PROPER SLI setup...... 3D Mark 05 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=2171315 3D Mark 06 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=444509 the score is a good 1000 points higher then my 7900GTX score ?????? The hard mod to the chipset is 100% the same as doing it on the 939 NF4 Ultra chipset....
thejamesvolta Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 I want to do the same thing as the OP. So if I understand correctly...to make PCI Slot 3 8x, all I need to do is plug my Video card into that slot (slot 3) and move the jumpers. Correct??? SpursIndonesia Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 Well, guys in Malaysia successfully modded this MoBo into SLI, check out this review : http://www.pcmoddingmy.com/e107_plugins/co...p?content.377.
Spunkmeyer6 Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 Well I didn't move it for Sli purposes, just purely for access/cooling due to the layout of the board. CPU, Ramslots and PCIe-1 are far too close together together given the size of todays graphics and cpu coolers. I do have a spare bridge lying around from a Gigabyte 939 board but dont have another card to try it out. Just think it's handy to know that it works, bound to be other users coming up against the same constraints.
