A7n8x Deluxe 2.0 W/2500+

this is very disappointing, i just built a new system and despite the expensive hardware i can't OC this 2500+ faster than my other 2500+ on my cheapo Chaintech 7nif2 summit nforce2 board.

my system:

a7n8x deluxe rev2.0

2500+ barton

2x512 corsair xms pc3200 platinum

420w psu

i am able to get it to 185fsb with default mp (11.0) and i can raise the mp slightly, but i really should be able to get a 200fsb. every time i try to get a 200 fsb, it wont post with a "system failed memory test" message (gettin sick of that woman) I have tried increasing voltage to every level possible 1.65-1.85, makes absolutely no difference, i have a feeling this board is stubborn.

my other system:

7nif2 summit (chaintech, nforce2)

2500+ barton

2x512 corsair pc2700 (not xms, not super low latency, just value cheap stuff)

400w psu

i am able to get this system to a 200fsb stable, at 2.21ghz

there is a definite problem here, considering everybody just "boosts to 200fsb on their a7n8x w/2500+ OUT OF THE BOX" like its no big friggin deal.

please help me out.

All AMD and INTEL CPU's will not be exactly the same. U might have one 2500+ that can o/c to 225fsb but the next will o/c less. From the looks of this I belive your "luck of the draw" was bad. The Asus Board is definatly the better board outta the two. what u might try doing is switching up the cpu's u might find that the original cpu that could o/c higher might be able to do better on the asus board. Besides that make sure your mobo bios is up to date. I would recommend going to the asus site and downloading the latest version and NOT the beta bios version. If you have any other question just ask.

yeah youre right, im pretty sure i got the short straw.

BUT I DONT WANT TO BELEIVE IT!!!

anywho, i do have a question:

is it possible to update a BIOS w/o a floppy drive?

all this new technology and it seems i forgot to get one.

by the way, i set the multiplier to 10.0 and i can get a 2.00ghz out of it, boosts into OS great, not a problem. is this typical?

ok i can manage that, got a floppy round here somewhere...

i have another question though:

i dont know if youre familiar with the vocal post messages from the a7n8x deluxe, but i always get the message "system failed memory test" and it never says "system failed due to overclocking" or, "system failed CPU test" which are two other options. i doubt this is a RAM problem, but do you think it has anything to do with my RAM timings?

IT could possibly be many things. 3 main reasons i would think of off the top of my head are the mem-cpu ratio , Mem timings , or mem voltage. make sure check your recommended timings and voltages from the manufacturer's site. and make sure your mem/cpu ration it set correctly. if you still having problems I would run MEMTEST86. it runs from the dos prompt and will test your memory for errors. IF you still having problems and your memory is fine after u run MEMTEST86 I would recommend sending the mobo back. but check with me first if u still have problem b4 u think about sending it back. i might be able to help you further.

if ya got windows on your system, install the asus update software. you can flash your bios from the WEB on newer asus boards with that software.

I have gotten slightly better results out of my Nforce 3 pro board after the newest bios updates.

you were talking about your vcore settings, you might want to try increasing your vdimm and see if that helps you run at a higher fsb.

and about the bios update, definately follow the advice that bigred gave you. and only flash your bios while at stock settings (or at some setting where you know your comp is completely stable at. you don't want to risk having your computer freeze while flashing your bios) gl to ya.

You might also consider "dumping" your memory timings down into the 7-3-3-3 range, take it out of high performance or whatever, and see if you can hit 200fsb then...

After that, bring up one timing at a time, and hit CAS last. I have found (on my MSI board anyway) that although a fast CAS setting gets you better benches, higher fsb does it more.

So you might get better benches at 200fsb, synchronized memory fsb, no voltage changes, at memory Timing 7-3-3 than at 190fsb with tons of voltage to get your RAM down to 5-2-2. I always leave my RAM at cruddy timings until I have gotten the fsb up, and my VC clocked up, then I hit the RAM in very slow increments. This could be particular to the MSI boards (I don't have an ASUS, but read lots about them), but I know lots of Rev1.0 guys hit 200 by dropping the multiplier to 10 or 10.5.

i dont understand this thread. "system failed memory test" means memory failed test.. that is whats holding that BARTON back, i mean it could be the CPU but the chances its the CPU are 1 : 10000 that its the RAM. switch memory with your other pc or buy better ram. i wouldnt worry about doing anything else before doing that. run memtest with that clock/fsb speed and i bet you the errors will be popping up everywhere. my board would say system failed memory test 1 out of 20 times and my ram was bad.. if your getting it at every boot i dont understand then... anyways run memtest and switch ram sticks with your other system..

*edit* i would also run memtest with one stick then the other. also for future reference when you get everything going 11 - 2 - 2 - 2 should be your settings at 200fsb... its a clitch with the nforce chipset, dont believe me then go here
