Newbie Help.....

Recommended Posts

I built this computer this past week and have noticed higher than normal chipset temps. I have been googling for answers and that is how I ended here. The CPU remains at 38c with stock fan and no overclocking, the chipset hits 55c at times, but idles at 45c.

The rig is a DFI Lan Party NF4 SLI DR with an Athlon FX-55, two gigs OCZ PC3200 Ram, LeadTek Nvidia 6800 GT (single, not SLI), (2) WD 74 gig Raptors in a Raid 0, inside of a Silverstone aluminum case. The case has a 80mm exhaust fan and a smaller fan (not sure on size) pulling air in over the hard drives. One thing I have noticed is that the rear of the video card lays on top of the heatsink and cooling fan for the Nvidia chipset.

Any ideas or directions is appreciated, inthe meantime I will be looking through the threads here for more info.

Thanks

ADDED: Here are links to screen shots from Everest if that helps, if I am being a spaz please let me know.

The chipset temps you speak about here are within spec. 45-55c is normal.

Also, as per the forum rules, please make a signature with your computer specs in it. Much easier for us to help not having to look up at this thread every time we want to see what you've got in your rig! :)

Hey Poppy thanks for the heads up on the Sig, I noticed the sig rule in another thread but all that was mentioned by the mod was to read the rules. When I registered for the account I actually looked for the reference to the sig rule to learn about it before I posted, but I didn't see it.... Anyway, I am sure it was staring me in the face.

The only reaon why I thought it was higher than normal was because the Nvidia monitor by default was alerting me to the temps. I ordered an Arctic Cooling system for the vid card hoping that takes away some of the heat. I would like to try an OC, but can't affford to burn anything up.

Overclock your FX-55? Heh, you poor thing... :)

Also, WELCOME TO DFI STREET! I hadn't noticed this was your first post. Hopefully you will find this place very informative and helpfull.

My chipset stays constant at 50c regularly... but it doesn't help that my house is 83 degrees at all times, even with my AC on high!! (Don't know why my house is so hot...) But hey, I'm moving next month, I'll let the next people deal with it... :)

I myself put the arctic cooling GPU cooler on my 6800GT and it ROCKS. I can overclock my card past 420 GPU and 1.1 Memory with this cooler! I wonder how much higher I'll be able to take it when I move to Iceland and my house will be a constant 60 degrees F!!

Who did you piss off? I was confusing Iceland with that radar tower in Greenland I have been threatened with. Thanks for the reassurance on the chipset, this is my first step off the Intel platform. When I am not gaming I do forensics for Govt and had the chance to play with many of the Opterons. As far as work apps go so far so good, now if only Win XP 64 was more stable.

hmm 45 is ok.. before i apply artic silver 5 i got about close to 48.. Singapore is a tropical country and my flat is rather warm (according to my gf).. After Artic Silver 5 i got about 44, at max i think 47. Not yet lapped my chipset cooler, cos of a sqaure sponge on it. Guess its there to protect the chipset. I applied AS5 the same way as i apply on my processor. Drop a small drop and flatten it with the heat sink.

I just bought my system and have stumbled over the same chipset temperature problem as well. I had my 7800GTX installed in the PCI-E 1 slot, which pretty much covered the chipset fan. First I took the fan off and completely removed the padding and yellow thermal crap on the heat sink. DON'T REMOVE THE SQUARE PADDING. I found this out after I did it but it still appears to be okay. Apparently it's needed to prevent the chipset from cracking when you put it back on. I put a small dab of AS5 on it, though some people prefer using AS Ceramique, and took off the chrome plating from the heatsink. After that I booted up and probably got almost 2C difference in idling but still high temps up to 52C while gaming. Did a little more research and found moving the 7800GTX down a slot and switching the jumpers to sli mode would help with cooling without any performance loss. I also found some people mounting fans over it. So I bought a Thermaltake 120mm fan and positioned it over the chipset. I got some good results. My chipset temperatures never went pass 48C after a full night of gaming on WoW, and my 3200+ idles at now idles at 32C and never goes pass 38C. It also helped cool the PWM. Another alternative is to buy the Antec Iceberq 4 but you'll need to dremel to get it to fit.
