A question for you and others that have modded a case to create a window. I’ve notice screws thru the case into the plexiglass (I’m assuming plexiglass ) in all the ones I’ve seen photos of. Is that necessary? I might do this to my case someday, and was figuring on glueing the plexiglass to the case. Are there reasons one wouldn’t want to glue it in?

What did you use to cut the case? Dremel? Grinder?

Screws worked the best for me, never tried glue or thought of using it. I like the looks of the screws, but if you were going for a streamed lined look it would be nice to use glue. I used a airpowered die grinder to cut the hole in the side, and a tablesaw to cut the plexi.

Thanks for all the advice. That industrial two sided tape looks like a good alternative. I’m sure there is a glue for anything and everything. There was an incredible documentary on glues on the History Channel recently. Amazing what they use glues for these days. They even covered thermal grease, which, obviously, isn’t just a glue. Very interesting. Worth watching as I’m sure they’ll show it again.

Seeing screws visible just looks a little tacky to me, but obviously others think differently. However, before I completely inserted my foot in my mouth, I just looked at a case on Newegg, and there are visible screws holding the window in the Thermaltake Tsunami VA3000. I never noticed them before. Small screws with heads whose finish matches the case. Well, I’ll obviously roll this project around in my head for a while before I undertake it.

VERY NICE! IMPRESSIVE! You might want to consider turning the hard drives around so the connecting wires are away from the window - for a cleaner look ...

Awww crap tongue.gif Thanks guys... Apreciate it.

Yeah I tried flipping them around but there isnt enough space to do so on the other side with the power connectors... I am looking into ways around it tho!!!

i always say, if a desk isn't messy than you're not fiddling inside your computer enough, lol.

my desk has screw drivers, flash light, case screws, cables, 3 cpu's, some vid card mem heatsinks, a ruler, a stress ball lol, pipe tape, note pad with tweaking notes written on it, burnd CD's, magnifine glass, calculator for the component mutli's dividers and other things. two monitors, and lastly a computer! lol

Amen to that,

These are parts of my work area when I am not working on anything. This week I had 3 machines completely taken apart for cleaning and upgrades, at the same time. I was tripping over stuff, knocking boxes of screws and dvd-r disks off my desk, dropped my keyboard like 3 times, till some buttons popped off. I still don't know where they went, disappeared mysteriously. Then I dropped a big thumbscrew on a sheet of safety glass, and the pieces went every where. I hate working in a mess, but you can't not make a mess when building computers. So then I spent a whole day cleaning everything, before my wife got home from work, hehe.

heh, sounds like my place. i've still got fans and cables and water cooling parts and water cooling loop leak testing and a half taken apart computer and a printer, old heatsinks, fan controllers, mobos, vid card, hard drives, cd-roms, computer speakers, tester psu.... all on my kitchen table and kitchen table island .....lol. i have no freakin place to eat!

my 6 foot tall cabinets used to look like your shelf, but i've been doing water cooling and new component upgrades, then building three older computer's so i just left all the stuff out until i get my testing done.

i have two DFI NF3-250 754 mobo's, my first one fried and killed my vid card so i had to wait weeks for that on the vid card and i couldn't find a single DFI NF3-250 for my Mobile Newark anywhere and when i found one i bought two. so i have to test that one out, then i won an Epox NF4-SLI 754 mobo from another forum give away and Epox says that they don't support Mobile chips so i've got to test that out. then finally reassemble my main system with the water cooling and get running back up to 3.2~3.3ghz

some times it seem i got too much stuff to even get organized, let alone placed back into my cabinets.

lol, well, it's like i was saying, i have a half torn apart case from when my DFI NF3 mobo died and fried my AGP card and my pump died. i've had to wait weeks to find another DFI NF3-250 b/c DFI has dicontinued the mobo and i've had to wait weeks for my pump parts to get though Asetek's RMA process. so when i got my new DFI NF3-250 mobo and my RAM'd 7800gs back, i was still waiting for my pump parts and i have to take the mobo out to install my water cooling. so i just left everything undone since i have to take it all apart anyhow. less work do to and i wasn't planning on waiting on Asetek to take a month to replace my pump parts.

in the next few week's i'll have it all done up nice again like my pix that i've posted on this thread already tongue.gif ...lol

and if you wanna come over and give my computer your magic touch, come on over already, lol. you can re-install just about everything in my case plus the water cooling system  hehe

Never really had a chance to mess with the latest Lian-Li cases before.
Found it a lot of fun to say the least.

Black V-1000 w/window, FX-57, Shin-Etsu TIM, OCZ PC4000 Plats, Thermalright XP-120, ThermalTake A2018 fans (3), Internal ADDA 120mm fan, eVGA 7800GTX KO, 2x74G Raptors RAID 0, NEC ND-3540B

Finished Case

Removed 2nd HDD cage for more room

Wires and sheet in bottom half of case

Lapped the schnitzel out of the XP-120

The eVGA 7800 GTX KO looks like it's part of the "DeathStar"

Used one of the stock fans inside for even more case air flow

All purty at night

Added some logos to cover the bare aluminum

Beautiful case but with all the ventilation holes on front and rear it's hardly quiet.
At 3.1 GHz now and I'll throw up some benches later.

Yes, soundx98 is awesome.

@ soundx: Do you have a website with all your rigs on it?
soundx98

Well thank you both very much for the kind words.

No website, but I think I've 7 or 8 rigs in this thread smile.gif
The more times you do something the better you get at it.
The guys that do watercooling AND a nice case setup have always impressed me.
You start filling up those cases and wire/cable management become much more difficult.

And I realize I am pretty anal retentive about the whole process of a build.
Always build the rig outside the case 1st. Need a plan for what I am gonna do.
Downloaded the manuals and printed them out and made little notes in the margins before I even purchased the goods or built them.
Took my time putting components in and positioning wires so they were hidden whenever possible. Spending 6-10 hours on cable management is not unusual (Make that VERY anal)

But there are some great rigs in this thread. A lot of different syles and ideas.
I come here often for inspiration and to see the latest.
If you get a chance check out FarEast's rig towards the front and find his link to his work log. Now that's dedication.
red930
I'm like soundx98 about my rigs. Lots of time invested in getting everything just right.

Hell, even Erzebet in the FlowaPowa case with no window gets the same treatment.

I think it has something to do with the saying... "if you're gonna do something, do it right!"

or

"straighten your room up boy or I'll whip your ass!!!" lol

Heh not in my particular case. I fiddle with the inners of my case a heck of a lot, constantly upgrading and trying out new things constantly striving for that perfect setup. The difference being that I have a toolbox with neat compartments so I can find the right tool or screw or whatever accessory swiftly and get on with the job at hand as fast as possible. I always clean up after myself however and put things back where they were right away. Not only do I prefer the guts of my case to be clean and well planned out but also the workspace around my box so that I can enjoy my rig more thoroughly  .

i agree about having things looking nice and sorted, but the situation i find myself in presesntly is: i had my new DFI NF3 die on me, which killed my X800xt-pe and the day before that, my water pump died. so i tore my machine apart getting the water cooling out, then the mobo and vid card out, and left it like that expecting to have my PMA go through newegg and have it back in about a week. Well, newegg went out of stock on the mobo and i ended up having to search for about two weeks with calling every place i saw the board for sale till i found a place that actually had them in stock instead of those nasty NF3-250AL's(DFI stopped production of my DFI NF3-250 LP-UT mobo). so then ASUS ended up taking 3 weeks to get my video card back to me which pissed me off b/c everyone was telling me ASUS is quick about that, and i had already sold that (when i got it back) so i bought a 7800gs. i ran the 7800gs in the NF2/barton system running on air that replaced my NF3 water cooled setup for the time being. then my 7800gs had issues as it would drop my system to a blank screen everytime i tried to run anything 3D. so i had to RMA THAT too, geez! so i was left with a torn apart system, fed up to my ears with these hardware companies, no new hardware returns yet, and bored out my skull. so i grabbed all my old parts i had in my cabinets and started tinkinering around and the next thing i know i've built three computers out of the parts.

so, i thought at this point, some of my parts are coming in and i have to rip everything apart out of my main system, so i left it all like it was thinking i'd get things taken care of in a few days. but then Asetek took their good ole time (a month) to send me replacement parts for my water pump.

so now, i've got my RMA'd NF3 LP-UT mobo (i bought 2), my RMA'd 7800gs running in my case, but on air. i just got my RMA'd pump parts the friday b4 easter and now i have the water cooling system all put together and i've ran it for two days leak testing and testing that pump for failure. what i need to do now is: take out my NF3 system to take the air cooler off, then set things up outside of any case and test my 2nd (back up) NF3 LP-UT, then take that apart and then test my skt754 Newark cpu in an Epox NF4-SLI skt754 that i won at another forums give away to see if the mobo will run my Mobile chip b/c Epox says they don't support Mobiles. then take that all apart and while installing my NF3 LP-UT back into my case, also install the preassembled water cooling system. then route everything correctly and tidy everthing up in the case.

thats why i haven't cleaned anything up. i've been waiting for all this work to get done. it's only been compounded by long RMA times and my utter frustration over all my NEW hardware taking a crap on me. it's been a long frustrating path with all this shit happening but i'm nearing the end and i'll be back to neat and clean again soon enough.

Then i'll post a picture of the work i like to do with respect to my computer systems.

here's some of my work......

I came across a good deal on a NF3 Ultra D. I always liked the idea of 939 socket dual channel and AGP video, there still some pretty nice agp video cards out there.
The only thing I'm going to say about the DFI NF3 Ultra D motherboard is I wish Oskar had designed this board.

CaseCheiftec Matrix tower , it's been around the house for a long time and has had 4 or 5 different setups in it. It's been mooded for water cooling, phase cooling and it's modded for 120mm fans intake and exhaust.
DFI NF3 Ultra D Motherboard
AMD 3500+Clawhammer2763MHz. on water_2550MHz. on air
Memory2x512 OCZ PC3200 EL Plat. Rev2
Video card PNY6800 ULTRA agp (still a awesome video card)
Hard Dive Seagate 200Gig. SATA II
Peripherals LITEON 16X Super Allwrite, Mad Dog MegaSTOR Combo burner
Floppy drive
Matrix Orbital MX610 with dallas thermal sensors
Enermax 6 channel fan controller
COOLING Thermalright XP-90 with 90mm TT blue led
Zalman VF700-CU LED VGA cooler (not installed yet)
Panaflo 92mm L1B (intake front side pannel mod)
120mm TT Thunderblade blue led, (exhaut top of case mod)
120mm Panaflo M1A (front intake mod)
80mm rear case fan exhaut
RD1 Bios Savior
UV yellow cable sleeving
PSUSunbeam NUUO SUNNU550-US-BK ATX12V/ EPS12V 550W SLI_ with fan controller.
About 75% of the componets are 2nd hand or I trade for
them. So this was a pretty good setup cost wise

Well other then some more cable managment UGH. It's done. I built this rig because I needed a good home rig that could do it all video stuff, music and gaming. My regular NF4 SLIDR||165 DC Opteron has become my traveling rig . I work out of town alot and it goes everywhere I go.

Evil_inc
I cut my self soo many times while making it on those sharp edges. Its all steel and a bit** to cut with tin snipps (as seen in the pic).

as for the materials its all scrap.

the case is from a crapped out pavilion

the dvd drive used to write but dosent anymore and is from a hp media center pc

the grills were from chicken wire i found in my back yard

the front fan is off a broken psu

The caution tape if from construction that we had done on our driveway

and all the paint is from half used tubes of acrylic.
225Slant6
Yeah you sure do have to be a man to hold that one. Good thing there is a Caution tape on there to scare away kids and old people. JK
