Even under heavy load, optical drives do not require as much cooling as hard drives do which is why my preference would be to place them on the very bottom of the case.

They don't have to sit directly on the bottom though. If you plan on having a base, either comprised of case feet or something that will raise the bottom of the case off the off the desk, then 1 to 2 inches should be fine.

Of course, with "desk clutter" being the variable, only you can decide what suits you. biggrin.gif

Ooh, there's an idea biggrin.gif

Optical drives on the bottom layer though? I would think it'd be better to have them up at least a few inches so that desk clutter doesn't interfere with the drive bays, is there a particular reason why you prefer the HDDs above the opticals?

lol, thats just what i was thinking. i'd never get my roms open if they were at the very bottom, lol.

fyi on my case; i got my cooltechnica "WYE" connector and some uv blue cool sleeves today in the mail. the elbows should be coming really soon. i met a mod on another forum and he's sending me a SLK948U to do some air testing on my Newark 4000 while i'm routing and stress testing my water system. should be fun to see the difference.
quisman
My new TJ107, pretty much a case dream come true for me. Had to make a lot of my own wires though because I'm so damn maticulous about wire placement. Guess i'm still to used to having a windowed case. Anyway, it's plain looking to many, but I love it. It's actually an "engineered" case. enjoy.

Redbeaver
that is B-E-A-U-TIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! opened the side panel and take some shots! me want to see inside biggrin.gif

These are linked in my sig but I will post them anyways tongue.gif

DUDE ! ! LOOKS AWESOME ! Must be cool to know what your desk looks like.
Once I get rid of the glasses, screws, cpus, popsicle wrappers, and bills I'll find out what kind of finish mine has. Can't seem to con the wife into cleaning it...but if she did I'd bitch at her for throwing something away :-)

Yeah but you haven't seen the floor. I cropped that out tongue.gif

I just noticed, your video card is in the bottom slot. I'm guessing it's so you have room for the Zalman on the chipset. Do you have to have it in SLI mode to do that? Does it affect performance?
General Septem
Here's my planned design:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y40/akai-...ei/IMG_1476.jpg

I made myself a thread about it but nobody seems interested enough to respond
KaollaSu
Putting it in the bottom slot makes no difference in performance.

I installed an NV5 Silencer on the video card and it almost completely covered the Evercool VC-RE on the chipset, so I moved it to the bottom slot.

This accomplished several things.

1) Chipset temps dropped significantly. As you can see there is no restriction on air flow.

2) Video Card Temps dropped. It is taking in cooler air from the bottom of the case and not sucking up heat radiated by the chipset.

3) CPU and PWMIC temps dropped because heat radiating off the video card is not as close to those sensors and there is less restriction on air flow from the front fans.
As you can see, if the video card is in the top slot then the front fans blow all the air underneath the video card and very little reaches the CPU or other components.

In the position the video card is in now, air flows across both sides of the card and more cool air reaches the entire system.

Everything I did inside my case is very calcuated and I have eliminated any and all hotspots. Anywhere you place your hand inside my case, you will feel nothing but a cool breeze.

i've read from people in this forum, can't recall who right now, but the bottom PCIe slot is an x8 and the top is an x16. and thery were sayingthere's no difference in performance from changing the first slot from x16 to x8 bus speed. the cards aren't bandwidth limited until you get SLI/Crossfire going.

then the new M2 dual core 667 HT Bus, DDR2-667 mem bus comes out. then dual gpu cards in SLI/Crossfire will start coming out and the extra bandwidth allotted for vid cards will be filled up againg, lol.

Verry nice job,I gotsta git me one o dem stackers...

There are a total of X18 lanes between the two slots. In "normal" configuration the top slot is X16 and the bottom slot is X2.

Once you change to SLI mode, both slots are configured for X8 operation.

My Laptop:

General Septem
That's some awesome case work, Darth

Did you do that yourself or did you have it professionally done?
THunDA
DarthBeavis.. Nice man.. I think you need a bigger monitor though..hehe.. smile.gif

btw.. Do you see any benifit from water cooling the ram ?

Just wondering since the tubing looks pretty small on them and im thinking it must be pretty restrictive..
DarthBeavis
I do not have everything hooked up so we will have to wait to see how well it OC's to guage performance. At any rate, it should be relatively quite.

The Alienware ALX case and the Hypersonic Laptop were painted by Smooth Creations. The laser-etched window done by www.hyperkore.com. I am not much of an artist, so I reply on professionals to get r done wink.gif

Thanda, thanks for making the pics layout better. I will strive to learn from ur uber l33t forum skillz

My rig so far. (work in progress)
Waiting for my ocz psu to be RMA'd so haven’t bothered sorting out power cables. rolleyes.gif
120m exhaust TT Smart Blue LED Fan with orange blades lol coz I broke the original.

I will probably get a UV neon, maybe some of them later cut fan grills, get rid of the big HDD rack and maybe the floppy one as well. Id put my single HDD up in on of the CD-ROM slots. What else do you guys think I could do to it? (besides sleaving power cables) I havn't done much to it since I can't stop playing css and bf2! Its only a month old so dont want to get the power tools out yet

The front of my old case: (coat 1of3 lol)

Sam Leach,

looking pretty l33t smile.gif

how about you put something, like maybe a strip of cardboard up in front of that CCFL so it's blocked out from the camera? it'll let us see the inside of your case with the lighting a lot better.

That's a huge monitor. Do you use that rig as a media center? I'm guessing from the layout.

Here are some pics of my latest build. This system runs so quiet and cool it's very nice. This is my first build using a DFI board and i'm hooked, truly the best board I've ever used.

Redbeaver
i thought i'll post here too other than the one from the Temjin thread.......

Here we go..........

better version of the 45deg. side view.....

....side view.......

...opening the panel.........

....with flash now....... yes, internal is painted Fire Red Gloss.......

Redbeaver
.... a little dusty, but just wanna show u the backpanel is painted Gloss Black to match the rest of the case...

.. my pride and joy.... took me about 6 hours to finish this... the left panel.....

...... again without the flash...........

....... and lastly.... the other 45deg side-view........... smile.gif

Thank you biggrin.gif

next project:

rip a vertical hole on the roof to make a passive blowhole, covered with matching black aluminium round mesh, and more engravving on the back panel (see the little blank area below the PSU? yeah, i wanna put a little tribal there.

front tribal is designed and made by myself, but left panel tribal i just google it... i made myself too, but about 10% out of it, i realize its just too freakin complicated lol so i resort to google tribal that can still cover up the 10% "damage" i made, and simpler........ found one biggrin.gif

ps: i made a wallpaper for myself tongue.gif
