hello I have a Thermaltake tough power 750w modular power supply. I just ordered two 4850's the other day (patently waiting; please don't flame me for my graphics card choice, it was cheep and seemed like a good buy.) but I have a question. Until recently I was sure that my PSU would handle two 4850's...Untill I saw this in an Anandtech review....

"With two 4850s paired up in CrossFire, we once again ran into issues with our power supply. Our 1000W OCZ EliteXStream wasn't always enough for the dual-GPU setup and in Call of Duty 4 our system rebooted in the middle of our test at 2560 x 1600. Thankfully OCZ sent us a PC Power & Cooling Turbo Cool 1200W unit that is certified for use with GeForce GTX 280 SLI, and if it works on that beast, it had better work with a pair of 4850s in CrossFire."

SO....a thousand watt power supply could not care for two 4850's????

Tbh, I do not know a lot about power supplies and rails...That is why I am asking you kind folks!

thank you for any reply, Appreciate it.

p.s. the model number and ratings on my PSU are as follows:

W0116RU

28a : +5v
30a : +3.3v
18a : +12v 1
18a : +12v 2
18a : +12v 3
18a : +12v 4
.8a : -12v

cheers!

Itll be fine, I bet Boscos life on it. tongue.gif

You'll be okay with that PSU. Just checked and the spec is 550w for CF on those.

Thermaltake isn't exactly a great brand when it comes to power supplies but you should be okay with that 750w supply.

Actually, the toughpower line is one of the best..

You cannot go by brand name alone, many well known brands have bad models and many persumed bad or unknown brands have some good models..

That may be true but Thermaltake's many many models that suck horribly make me never want to recommend or buy anything they make.

Well reviews are better than Opinions.

Shutting off before reaching the rated load doesn't exactly inspire confidence...

Better than exploding or killing parts.

Unless you want that?

Better than exploding isn't exactly something I shoot for when looking for a power supply.

If it shuts off that quickly at under the rated load what do you think will happen long-term when you run it at 75% load?

I personally think that is a little irresponsible on Anand's part. If a 1KW PSU is having problems with 2 4850's then there is something else going on besides there not being enough power available and it needs to be investigating thoroughly before stating that such a power supply isn't enough.

As for the Thermaltake quality concerns expressed, the Toughpower line is perfectly fine in my opinion.

They draw like 150W max each iirc

4850s are very low power draw cards, the TP 750 will be plenty of grunt. Check the TweakTown crossfire 4850 review - two gave amazing performance plus the lowest power draw per card of this gen and lasts high end cards. Two of them in a rig used 350 watts, only 50 watts more then a single GT280 system. Those are barebones systems though so a real rig will use more, but 400watts still plenty of headroom for other drives and accessories.

With graphics cards what is important is that the 12v rails have enough amps...with a lot of multi rail psu's you will run out of amps on that 12v rail well before you run out of total psu rated watts.

lol I like the thermaltake line....

anyway. thanks again for you help everyone, I was thrown off by that review, but I'm sure that it should work out fine thanks to you all!!

Ill have to post my comp with pics soon, I think some of you may be impressed...maybe biggrin.gif

*cough* after the vid cards tongue.gif

Dont worry it should be fine, like Jammin said, the cause of the shut downs were probably something else.
As for the Thermaltake nuisance, I personally don't bother with them unless I'm planning on building a high end rig (for there TP> line), There Toughpower line has great quality, good efficiency and is very stable. It's on my list, behind the Corsairs HX series, and Seasonics M12 series.

Just my two cents.

That PSU will be dandy for your crossfire setup wink.gif

I have a 750 watt and 850 watt toughpower and they run great. I always use the toughpower line without a problem.
