It is very possible to do so; I in fact do that very thing. One of the catches is that the program itself has to have the ability to pick which audio card to port its sound to. I use my integrated sound for all computing tasks with my desktop speakers attached to it, and have an old Sound blaster live! 24-bit for teamspeak and attach my headset to it.
I see you have vista, so right-click on the speaker icon in the taskbar, and go to playback devices, set whichever sound card you will use the most as default, and then any program you want to use the other sound card with, configure the program manually to use that card. Good luck!
