Hi everybody,
That's right, I'm loosing internet when gaming:
Before I start the game, I can upload webpages. When the game is started, I can't upload them anymore. And the weird thing is that the icon in Vista on the taskbar, which says "Access: local network and internet", will stay like that for a few minutes and then it will become "Access: Local network only"!!!
Useful information:
I'm using a wireless PCIcard and a Dlink wireless router.
I'm playing Assassin's Creed and Colin McRae DiRT.
Do you know what could be the cause and how do I fix it ?
Oh, last thing, I ran Windows live messenger to try make it fix the problem and it says that the problem is that the defaut ...bridge... is offline ? I'm not sure how this is called in english but I think it refers to the router.
Please help me !

I had this problem once when there were to manny routers near my home on the same channel. try switching the channel. Also add your games to your routers QoS because it might be dropping packets based on priority. What router do you have? Do you have more than 1 LAN port? If so are they bridged?

I have the Dlink DI-524. For LAN ports I have only 1: my PC is connected to another PC by a CAT-5 cable but they are not bridged. It is only for file sharing.
And my router is the only one I detect from my PC.
And where should I go to add my games to my routers QoS ? Is it in the router configuration ?
Thanks

QoS is done in the router config. You also might just try resetting the router first. It is in essence a mini PC and sometime jsut needs to be reset. How long has this been happening?

LOL I didn't know that routers had a reset button at the back ! Unfortunately it didn't change anything.
I searched for QoS in the router settings but I didn't find anything. In which menu is it ?

I am not sure with your model. Just google it and it should lead you to a manual (If your router supports it though). I use a Linksys wrt54g with a custom firmware (DD-WRT) so I am no help with your menus. Sorry

OK...I didnt find a manual but I read that this router DOES NOT have QoS. I'm afraid I'll be obligated to leace the problem like that...
Thank you very much ajmatson.

No problem good luck with it. Just another hint reset your cable modem so it releases and renews your IP address. That might help you also.

TS,
When you say that you are losing the internet when you start gaming . . . .
Are you multiplayer gaming over the WAN? Or does this happen when you start a single player game on your local machine?

No I'm not a big multiplayer gamer. I don't really like FPS and I don't play MMOs.
Anyway, I just found that that wasn't the problem... It happened that I lost the connection when I was gaming so I thought it was that, but no. It's that my wireless router range is not big enough. I brought my PC directly beside the router which is on another floor and internet was working !!! Then I took my PC back up in my bedoroom, closed the door and window, lost the internet !!!
So I conclude that I'm just on the limit of my wireless router range. Is there a way to increase it ? I have a Dlink DI-524, as mentionned above. I read that we can make an antenna out of a tin can, etc, but a more simple way ?
Edit: Now I lose the connection for a few seconds and it comes back rapidly...

Wireless repeaters are hit and miss and you WILL lost bandwidth when you're using a repeater.
If you can swap the stock antennae with a high gain unit that might help.
Otherwise you're stuck either relocating your pc or relocating your wireless router.
Here is a link to a good antennae that would work with your unit;

I'm currently trying something: Instead of my PCI WIFI card antenna, I put a wire which I connected to a suspended lamp. Since yesterday evening I didn't lose the connection.

increase ur tcp connections from 10, how? search on google "lvllord" go to the first link, download the utility, and when u run it, change the limit to maximum, should show this number in brackets when u press "C" when running the utility, this will "increase the spread of viruses" but with good hardware / software firewall u should be ok

I read that you need Windows XP SP2 (from RC2 upwards) or Windows 2003 Server SP1 beta. Will it work if I have Vista SP1 ?

Ok, I tried it and it does not work with vista. I ran the program:
It locates the C:/Windows, but then it is not able to find the .../system32/drivers/tcpip.sys
However, I went to this folder and the file is here ! I wondered, could it be unable because Vista asks for an authorization when trying to modify this file ?

I have the same router as you, and havent experienced problems like yours but rather just lag when gaming. I fitted
this to the router which did make a noticable change to reception (didnt cure the lag though lol)
Also regarding you TCP limit, check out this thread, although if you do try it be careful because i obvisously missed something somewhere and wrecked my vista install and had to boot of the disk and do a system restore lol.
http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.p...t=0&start=0And the wire to a suspended lamp.....you mean just a normal lamp on a big metal pole type thing?

Thanks for the link.
And the lamp is a kind of iron forged one with a candle. here's a pic:
Click to view attachmentEdit: My PC is staight under. The red wire goes from my PCI WIFI card to the lamp.
And since I did that I didn't loose the connection ! So would it mean that my antenna was the problem, and not my TCP limit ??

That adds a whole new meaning to "high gain" antennae
