I upgraded to 20mb internet but was only getting ~6.

Rang up, they say you should wait until 24hours from when you rang first, so i did they said, wait for 1 more hour. I did, reset modem etc..., restarted pc = same thing.

Rang up, then they say are you using USB? yes was my reply. So now they told me to go an buy an ethernet cable to use to get 20mb, they would send me it but they get stolen in transit laugh.gif

So they take £5 off of the bill and make you buy it yourself

So, i need a preferably around £5 around 1m ethernet cable for use with my computer and a motorola surfboard sb5100 modem smile.gif

USB connections on cable/DSL modems are typically only capable of a max of 10Mbps; so for anything faster you'll need to use the CAT-5 with which most modems are capable of up to 100 Mbps.

Wish I could get 6mb. Here in the Ribble Valley we are apparently isolated and there's no fibre optic cable connection. It doesn't matter how you connect, whether it is USB or Cat5. Originally started at 8mb, too many problems, dropped to 4mb, still no go and finally ended up at 2mb with no prospect of any future improvement. If my broadband speed depends upon dated copper wires it's hardly surprising. Broadband in the UK is in my opinion on the verge of complete collapse, perhaps not in the larger cities, but certainly in the suburbs and rural areas.

Just like to mention we do not have cable in the Ribble Valley and due to the costs involved are very unlikely to have it in the near future.

Perhaps we have a different issue at hand.

I'm guessing you were advertised 20Mbits per second. Are you getting 6Mbits per second or 6Mbytes per second? There's a significant difference between the two.

like 5800 kbps

Last night i read on the bbc news site that a higher percentage of people in rural areas than in urban areas have the internet...

I watched Countryfile last week (sad I know and I apologise) and the internet was mentioned. Broadband, or the lack of it, was causing major problems for businesses located in rural areas. Some still relied on 56K modem connections because they were located too far away from telephone exchanges and the copper wire connections couldn't cope with broadband.

I should have been a little clearer. Are you getting 6 megaBYTES per second, or 6 megaBITS per second? If you're getting the former, then there really doesn't seem to be a problem as you were advertised 20 megaBITS per second, but if you're getting the latter, then we're gonna have to go with the ethernet cable option.
PeterStoba
I've no idea, presume it is the latter, speedtest.net says 58** kbps, and i maximum download at about 35 kbps in firefox.

Heck, I thought you were looking for a cable for less than £5 is why I posted what I did...
