Should a power supply at least turn on and run the fan without anything hooked up to it, ie no load?
I got my new OCZ Gamesteam 600W PSU and tried to turn it on with nothing....
Hooked it up to all the new component of my new system (see my post in system builds)... minus the video card... still nothing.
Brand spanking new and it wont turn on? Suggestions/Thoughts are appreciated.

If you don't have it plugged into a motherboard, flipping the switch will do nothing. You will have to short two of the pins in order to test it out, or of course, plug it into a motherboard.

OK, thanks... well now it is plugged into the mobo.
Everything is connected as best I can tell.... minus the video card....
And still nothing....

well if you have the 20/24 pin hooked up and it is not turning on sounds like a bad psu to me but it could be something else, is there a fuse anywhere? is it brand new? if it is DO NOT open it up it will void the warranty, if it is old and it cannot be returned heck open it up look for possible burnt capcitors or disconnected wires.

I saw your other thread in system build. And wondering if you tried your old PSU to see if it powers it up?

Nope, the old PSU is in this computer that I am using right now.

some motherboards won't power up without a vid card... IIRC

Well, I am hooking up the video card later today.... maybe I will try this card real quick.... I will report back.

Duh, that won't work, got all the way to sliding this video card in before I realized this isn't a PCI-E card and there are no PCI slots on the new Gigabyte board. My new mobo is arriving this evening, guess I have to wait for it.....
I just doesn't make sense that the power supply won't even turn on though...

OK, PSU works fine. I "jump started" it using this technique:

So, that means my lack of power is likely just the fact that I have no video card yet.
No worries, thanks smile.gif
