I've seen several converters that turn a single 5-1/4" external drive bay into a 3-1/2" drive bay, but has anybody seen conversion hardware that turns more than one big bay into more than one small bay? Kind of like the Lian Li cages for hard drives, but for devices that need access to the outside world.

(They have a fan in the front, so sticking a 3-1/2" fan controller in there would be problematic)

Anybody??

CoolerMaster makes a single 5 1/4" to single 3 1/2" converter for use in their CM Stacker cases. I assume they might work in other cases as well. (NM - that has a mesh front to match the stacker cases).

Addonics makes one.

Nemo, there are literally dozens of single bay converters, but that's not really what I'm looking for.

I wonder if I can disassemble the multi-bay to HD converter...

Not sure what your intended use is, but what about converting multiple single bay units instead of disassembling a multi-bay unit? Just a thought.

Not sure what you mean, but if you're suggesting putting 3 or 4 bay converters in a stack, I think it would look dopey. Besides, big drive bays are 6" by 1-1/4", small bays are 4" by 1". A converter for 4 large drive bays would provide room for 5 devices and would be a more efficient use of space.

OTOH, if you're suggesting that I hack 3 or 4 bay converters together to eliminate the vertical space between units, I hadn't thought of that. I'll look into it, but I have a sneaking suspicion it would end up costing more -- the cheapest bracket at Performance-PCs is $10. Even the one at Addonics is $5.

Also, I have to admit that it would be some work to find 5 different small bay devices...

how can you possible need 5 fan controllers lol?

I think I've spent about £150 on fans for my main rig... I might get two fan controllers at most... ideally just one...

I can't really see a need for 5 fan controllers, either, but there are other goodies:
USB/Firewire Hub
Switch bus
LCD Display
Card Reader
and even Floppy Drive

I admit I can get any one of those in the larger size. I'm just sayin'.
