Greetings All,

I'm new to the forum and hoping someone can help me.

I received for Christmas the Geek Squad 875VA UPS. This is a welcome addition to my system as it's not unusual to have brief power outages.

However, I've had it plugged in and running for almost 36 hours and it says:

Remaining Battery Capacity: 60%
Remaining Battery Runtime: 7 mins.
Battery Backed Up Load: 183 watts

The problems are:
  • The charge seems to be stalled around 60%
  • The remaining battery Runtime seems to be stalled at 7 mins.
  • The box says that I should be able to get up to 90 minutes of system backup power

Because the charge and runtime is somewhat stalled, it leads me to believe that something is wrong with the charge rate.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

If battery charge never rises above 60% it's POSSIBLE that the charge meter isn't working right, but it's more likely that one of the batteries inside the UPS is dead. If you're motivated, you could experiment -- pull the unit's plug and time how long your computer lasts under a reasonable load.

If it doesn't come up to scratch, you could arrange a return (through the gift giver, if necessary). Personally, I wouldn't bother -- just return it and get one with all cells operating.

yep return it. you dont even need a recepit to do a exchange in best buy if its before like jan 13th or something.

I'd return it, but from experience, I can tell you that the run-time claims on the box are grossly exaggerated.

We were discussing this UPS in this thread. Before you return it, look on the label and see if you can find the UL number and post it back here. We were trying to determine if this particular unit is a re-badged CyberPower Systems or made by some other company.

Well let's see with my several year old 1285VA model it's saying:
121V Input
60Hz Output
0.450Kw output
60% Output
100% Battery capacity
7 min Est. run time

Idk what kind of load you have on your but mine has:
Main rig (SMP folding)
Server (SMP folding)
MSI system with a celeron instead of Core 2 (OCCT)
20" LCD
Alarm clock
Router

All running from it atm with these estimates and specs. First off did you follow the initial charge directions? Next the estimates are mostly wrong on these things, but so far in a good way, I can get around 12 minutes out of this one with the current load assuming power goes, however the main rig is set to turn off, it tells the MSI system to shutdown first, then the server and router stick with it till power totally dies (another UPS in the other room keeps the DSL modem up and running along with my shuttle so ive got decent power failure protection now) This setup gives me around 20 mins on the server under ideal conditions meaning I wasnt gaming on one of the other systems or they dont shutdown due to certain activity.

btw, mine also says up to 90 minutes run time on the box, yet as you can see depending on the load it varies greatly.

The box says that I should be able to get up to 90 minutes of system backup power

Is there any fine print on that box? I'll bet there is. And somewhere on there it says that you can get up to 90 minutes of run time, and in really tiny print it says--If you're running a TI-83. And in even smaller print it excludes the "Silver Edition". laugh.gif

Seriously though, I agree with Nemo, the run times that they give are under conditions that no "normal" user would have.

I just took it back and got another one. IMMEDIATELY, the charge was at 100% with a run time of 17minutes. Load is the same. I'll let it run 24 hours and see if anything improves. Heck, the run time has more than doubled already.
