Full Version: Thinking about a UPS

Well now that I'm building a new system, I should probably protect the sucka, so I'm looking for a UPS. All I care about is sustaining the flickers...if we get a power surge during a storm and we lose power for half a second, I want to prevent my PC from shutting off. I don't care about it staying up for several minutes during a blackout. So I'm just looking for something as cheap as possible that will prevent those little brownouts from shutting down my system, which will have a 650W PSU.

On my current PC, it will shut down if the power flickers. I have it set so it doesn't attempt to reboot, it stays off (safer that way). I've never had any damage this way, but if I can prevent that on my new PC with minimal cost, I'd like to do so.

Thanks.

I second APC. I have used one for years because where I live in AZ we get a lot of monsoons and it causes power spikes frequently. Go with an APC ups and you'll be happy.

Count me in for APC as well Clay. That is what we use for some of the more "critical" (actually just employees who complain a lot) workstations at work and they have been flawless. While I'm typing I must say it's good to hear you are finally upgrading Clay, it seems like you have been holding out forever waiting for the Crysis launch. So do you already know what you are going with? I haven't been around much lately so maybe there is already a thread? Anyway glad to hear you are upgrading, I need to get around to that myself before too long.

There are a bunch of threads I mention stuff in, but I didn't put it altogether in one thread. I will later, I gotta run now.

But I think you guys misunderstood my question. I want a SPECIFIC suggestion. I know APC is good (I was actually going to say "I prefer APC" in my thread, but decided not to as to be more open to suggestions...I guess I should have laugh.gif), that's what I got at work...but I don't want to spend the money I spent at work wink.gif. I know they have lower-end ones, I just don't know what's good to get...I've never owned a UPS for home use dry.gif

Thanks smile.gif

Any of them are good it just depends on how long you want battery life for. The bigger the unit the longer the battery.

The 350VA gives you about 15 mins depending on what you have plug into it.

The 500Va is about 20 - 30mins

600VA is about 30 - 40mins

and so on.......

You can get some bigger units and more fancy ones but they are over kill for a home PC.
