Full Version: So, you wanna see shiny?

Right, so it's not going to be long until I get the final pieces of hardware for overhauls of all 3 rigs, so I decided to take the E6600 from a quick 1200 grit lap to an extended 1500 grit lap. This was just done in the same lapping session as the much more important lapping of the Thermalright Ultra 120, with the ridiculous ridged base that looks like the surface of a vinyl record

Anyway, feast your eyes upon the shinyness!

Dazzling! cool.gif

The E6600 is shortly going to be treated to a D-Tek Fuzion, and the Ultra 120 is going to be slapped on a new X2 3800+ (which will be de-IHS'd as soon as I find a suitable blade)

Very nice work, it takes loads of patience (which I don't have) to accomplish such a good lapping...

withstupid.gif Looks good!

Do you have any plans on stripping your C2Ds? I know it's extremely difficult and most would think it impossible with average skills, but I know most people thought you were crazy when you stripped your A64s back in the day... So I still have to ask laugh.gif

the thought did cross my mind when I was thinking about how small the fuzion block is and whether or not it would fit inside the clasp type thing... if it doesn't, i probably won't bother

I know how to do it, it's whether installing cooling on a naked C2D would turn into a pure nightmare or not... I'll see how it goes with lapping first smile.gif

Best finish i have ever seen keep it up!

Also I think striping your C2D's just to decrease the temp's by a few degrees isn't worth it.

Usually losing the IHS on any CPU grants a fairly hefty drop in temps and a nice increase in the max OC as well. smile.gif

Yeah, but you have to worry about crushing the core if you don't put the heatsink/waterblock on just right. That's what would keep me from trying it. That and I'm really not into "extreme" overclocking.

True, but not even a few years ago almost all CPUs came without heat spreaders.

I never crushed a core in all my years working with naked dies and I wasn't exactly careful in my earlier years.

I've never seen a naked P4, but forgive me if I am wrong. (Not naked stock anyway) None of my P3's were naked and neither was the P2 or the MMX smile.gif The only naked dies I recall are AMD Athlon *maybe* some Thunderbirds smile.gif

I never saw a P2/P3 with a heatspreader, they were all exposed dies. IIRC all AMD chips from back then were naked as well (Athlon/Duron/Thunderbird).

nice job nrg, lets see some OCs and temps wink.gif I'm up for an OC battle, E6400 vs. E6600, GeIL 2GB vs GeIL 2GB (and if they don't cut it, I'll drop in the Mushkin HP2's with Micron D9 laugh.gif), and your 8800GTS vs my 2900XT... should be rather fair tongue.gif

i don't know of anyone on this forum who successfully did it - i know i tried it and it ended up killing the chip. sure, some say that the spreaders are glued to the cores, but this one wasn't.

nice lap job nrg. but not as good as my headlights! hah.

If he keeps sanding on there will be no need to remove it, it will be to the cores. tongue.gif

Looks good NRG

Can i have it back now? lol nice work btw! you should do the same to my new chip!

Results man! Don't tease the crowd!

definitely looking forward to seeing results---should be really good.

definatly nice.. is lapping absolutely nessesary for watercooling? i have a feeling i wud somehow screw up my cpu doing that.

no its not necessary. lapping is done to shave off a few more degrees off the temps. its not limited to watercooling, you can also lap heatsinks/water blocks as well.

Nice man!

I am thinking of doing the same with my e6300, since it appears that I have a convext IHS. Inspection doesn't show, but my temps sure do!

I was thinking of starting with 800 grit, and moving my way to 1500 after a 1200 quick.

Nice job though, real nice finish!
