Hey
I'm helping a friend of mine troubleshoot his PC and well it is the strangest thing I've seen. I'm thinking it could be the PSU is bad. The PC randomly reboots, no set interval and no particular thing going on, it also isn't always in windows when it happens it has rebooted from the POST screen and BIOS menu. There are no BSODs and no entries in event viewer, we have tried removing RAM, Changing CMOS battery, and resetting CMOS. Unplugged HDD and still reboots. The temps are also fine. Both of us are completely perplexed on this problem so I figured I would see if you guys know what it is, or just completely confuse you guys too.

It sounds more like a bad mobo than PSU to me. Do you have a spare mobo or PSU to do testing with? It could be caused by the PSU or CPU overheating. Make sure all the fans are working.

Check the volts on the PSU with a Volt meter.

All the fans are working, and the CPU temps are normal. I tested the volts and they seemed OK not great a little low. What gets me is you can put alot of stress on the CPU and it doesn't die. I would think if it was the CPU overheating it would do it then. And the air the PSU is blowing isn't too hot either. Like I said it is a very peculiar problem. It reboots completely randomly. I got there and it was doing it right away a bunch of times in a row, then it stayed on for a little while before it rebooted then it rebooted again while it was rebooting and after that was on for about an hour or so and that was when I had to leave.

Yeah, that sounds like a bad mobo to me. Can you give us detailed specs of this computer?

going to have to respectfully disagree....

but it is hard to tell until the orignal poster posts the specs of the system AND The specs of the power supply....

but...I kept upgrading compenents and using my trusty old PSU...finally, I was getting the EXACT symptoms mentioned.
Upgraded to an OCZ 700w PSU and everything is humming along perfectly.... ALL the symptoms went away

Well I don't know all the specs off the top of my head but it is a Asus K8v mobo the PSU is an Antec TruePower 2.0 550W 7600GS AGP video card

True, it could certainly be a overloaded PSU...

Hmmm... interesting, how old is the Antec PSU? and is this the Asus K8V/X SE motherboard? dry.gif

A few possible issues could be the AGP interface/driver for the board, I had issues with my Asus K8V like you detailed previously and setting the AGP card back to AGP x4 solved the issues, as did swapping out my R9600xt and replacing it with a GF4 Ti4200 so I'm not sure if it was an ATI ~ VIA incompatibility or just an AGP x8 issue wink.gif

However I had read somewhere that dual VGA output was also a cause of instability with this board, the trick was to disable/uninstall the second set of drivers/VGA output (at least with ATI 9xxx series anyway) smile.gif

Additionally, Antec PSU's did (and may still do) use fuhjyyu & capXon capacitors in their construction & I've had to recap 2 Antec's already... but in their favour once recapped (or when new) their performance & stability is excellent IMHO biggrin.gif
