YAY at last Ive had the time to start modding.

I started modding my one gfx card. just soldering on a variable resistor to let my change my gpu voltage! after some sniping and some scratching and one soldering iron tip leater i am half way though the mod heres some snap shots.

im still working on the other card! and i will right up some more leater to night.

gpu read piont added!

but the secoend card didnt go as well

more pics coming soon

NICE! Lets see some benchies wink.gif

unforunetly the second cards didnt mod as easy as the first card as i desoldered not only one resistor but 3!!!!!! after a good nights sleep it does look fix able and ive found 1 out the 3 missing resistors! but the tracks are a bit damaged! heres a few quick pics be for i bench!

Comp Dude2
lol, the 2nd card looks in bad shape. I think you need to get one of those solder suckers and get rid of as much as possible and then take your time to clean it all up.
markiemrboo
Oh dear! That does look a bit of a disaster.

The "missing resistor" parts and the blob of solder shouldn't be too difficult to fix if you are careful about it. See if you can clean up all that brown flux-like gunk. I think perhaps an idea might be to clean up the whole area with solder wick or something before proceeding any further. The resistor to the right of the top "missing resistor" looks a bit melted or something too?

A close up comparison of the good card would be good too, to see what that area is actually supposed to look like!
firky

1. its missing
2. the resistor has gone AWOL
3. same again
4. im not sure if i will find the tracks under here as i tryed to fidn them with my solding iron!
5. this should be easy to fix with a solder pump
6. this blob is now gone wooo!!
7. this looks melted but its still fixed the the board so it should be ok

but the good news is my modded card can now run a 770mhz gpu core!!!
markiemrboo
1, 2 and 3 you could measure the resistances of the originals on the good card and order new ones? Not sure on the package size though. 0604?
4: Possibly a bad idea trying to find the trace with a soldering iron, while the iron was still hot. They tend to be easy to pull off the PCB if too much heat is applied, in my experience. As I said, try and carefully clean up the gunk first. Isopropyl alcohol perhaps?
5. Yes.
6. Good oh.
7. Just because it is attached to the board still, it doesn't insure that the component is still OK tongue.gif I think you should be able to compare the resistance, with a multimeter, with the good board and make sure it checks out OK.
firky
4. lol it was 5 to 11 last night i was realy stressed because the resistor kept falling off so i tryed to stick solder to the traces but ive lost them! ill take a real close up pic now to show you! vinagur should clean it up ok!

sort of cleaned up!

the solder pump was a bit big!!!!

but i did find one of my missing resistors!!!

but heres the good news

markiemrboo
That is looking much better without the gunk. Still looks like you need a bit more tidy up though. I think solder wick is supposed to be better for cleaning up the IC pins smile.gif

Your irons tip doesn't look in particularly good shape either! Do you keep it nicely tinned and have a damp sponge nearby to clean it with? tongue.gif I like to keep mine pretty clean biggrin.gif

The picture is still rather small too. Can you get a higher res shot of that area?

i did start with a 1mm clean tip but the end wouldnt get hot so i had to change it to my old one! and i never cleand it last night good job too cuz a resistor was on the end lol! heres a pic of when i strted!

I'm having problems with my working card now grrr my screen keeps goin black and geen and pretty much broke!!!!! ive flashed my bios back and put the volts back down but i think i may have done some thing to this card too! this is turning out to be a bad first time mod! hmmmm but a 770mhz gpu core cant be bad it does run 800mhz at a bit of a push!
hardnrg
hmmm indeed... are you just trying to give yourself an excuse to buy an 8800GTX? laugh.gif

Seems to be working quite well biggrin.gif Maybe I should try too......! thumbs-up.gif

Back to on-topic land. Is it randomly black screening while playing games for a bit and stuff? Or will it do it even at the Windows desktop? My 6800 suffered from random black screens after a while too. It was really very annoying. It eventually died! Never did figure out a solution to that problem.

A shame if you've messed up the card, because the mod on the first card looked pretty tidy!

indeed i would love a 8800GTX but it would be a tight fit in my case!! but im looking at a BFG GeForce 8800 GTX Extreme WaterCooled 768MB This card would spank my other 7900's even if they were both working!!!

My messed up card did black screen when i pumped up the gddr volts and the drop from 3D clock set the card in to black screen mode lol! (this was befor i tryed to mod it!)

the black screens happen when my card has to render itunes, wma or even some pictures on this web site!!! but i did manage to run aqua mare with no black screens!! its working again now any way must been some dust some where!!! loving the 770 core!!!

Comp Dude2
Lol dude it is all going pear-shaped. I recomend fixing them and just leaving them alone like everyone else lol!
Crow47
Good Rig. But why so many hard drives? Wouldn't it be easier to just buy a 500gb? I know the purpose of the Raptor, that's fine. Also, I would get an xfi sound card. Just me.

firky
ive had a bad history with hdd's so i raided the 320gb's and the rest i just had around my house so i put them to good use! if i change my sound card ill get a razer!
xPETEZx
I got the Razer sound card. Its very nice smile.gif Would recommend it. However I don't know how it fares against the X-Fi's. Reason I got it over the X-Fi was because it has Digital EN-Coding.
