I was wondering if it would be ok to purchase a modular power supply. I have heard they are a little dodgey.

I will be running:

A64 X2 3800+ @ ~2.8/3ghz (depends on when i get my new heatsink)
Asus A8R32-MVP (If i get a r600)
2x r600 cards (if they are better than the 8800/8900's)
2x 36GB WD Raptors
1x 80GB WD Barracudas
4x 120mm fans (probably panaflow)

I wont get the second r600 card until they drop in price.

I was thinking of buying two of these. One for now, one for when I get the second r600.

Your replies please smile.gif

Silverstone PSUs are awesome, however I would advise you not to get dual R600's with that processore / mainboard. That will be a SERIOUS bottleneck! On the PSU, rather get a non-modular one, its somewhat safer. The 750W PCP&C Single Rail (60A) can be had for about he same price and is a lot better.

I think they would be VERY convenient, but they can sometimes be unreliable and can alter the stability of your PSU voltage output...

There is nothing particularly wrong with modular PSUs.
The extra connection points may affect voltages by a slight amount, but nothing too noticeable.

As for your r600 plan, I think I would be waiting for actual release before deciding on a platform for it.
An X2 3800+ does seem a little bit of a weak partner for them also, especially if you plan to go with CF.
I'd be going with one PSU over two as well seeing as you haven't bought anything yet.

Basically i'm upgrading one stage @ a time. Now that i have all the money i need for my car, i can go bezerk (kinda) on my computer. I will probably get a new mobo/CPU before i buy the second r600. The reason i want modular is because to sets of power supply cables is god dang messy! And I want the inside to look sharp and clean like the outside of my lian li smile.gif

I have a modular Antec Neopower 480 powering my main rig (FX55 @3.0, 512mb X1900XT, 2gb, 74GB raptor, 200GB sata, and so on):

It's been in there since I first built it in July of 05. It's been the most stable PSU I've ever used, and considering it's probably about maxed out with the hardware I have in it and all the overlocking, I think that's saying a lot.

I'm running an Enermax Liberty 620 in my rig, no power issues at all.

Silverstone makes an excellent PSU, IMHO. However, if you feel you need that much power, I would go for the Silverstone ST75F Strider 750W Watt Modular Cabling System SLI EPS ATX2.0 PCI-Express SATA 24Pin Power Supply Unit ST-75F rather than two separate power supplies.

I realised that i needed a better PSU when i did that PSU calculator. So yeh i have chosen a 750W PSU.

there are not MANY 750w modular units that i am aware of, but most well-known brands are just fine in modular - heavens knows where you heard they might be dodgy, but mine is solid as a rock - not been turned off for more than an hour or so since april 2006.

what??!?!?! Not more than an hour silverfox?! Holy smokes! I just had mine off yesterday whilst changing something with my rig, but that is a lot man!

750W should be more than enough, I have never had a modular, but I think it doesn't make a big difference for the cables. I would always get one with the cables attached firmly (non-modular) cause you bet I would loose those other cables!

well i remembered that i DID drive home (4 hours) with my PC, so i must be lying. otherwise, pretty much til december 27th not being turned off at all. it's my baby smile.gif and it is very solid. Hiper FTW laugh.gif
