Full Version: Thinking Of Adding In Intake(s) On My Side Panel.

So basically, I want to know of good placement, fans, hole drills, and drills.

I currently have a drill, but it is cordless, and thus probably not powerful enough.

I've got a reverse-ATX Lian-Li PCV1000.

So, any ideas?

This will be my first foray into case modding, and I'd like it to be a good one.

Also, I was wondering if it's possible to take the metal supports off of the door and put them on a plexiglass panel, for an easy window, or would it not be strong enough?
Verran
Well, as far as placement, I've always been a big fan of making an intake port for the CPU fan using something like this. That way the CPU gets fresh cold air from outside the case, and isn't pulling air from inside that might already be hot.

As far as -how- to do it, it will be tough with just a drill. The best solution would be to get a holesaw the size of the hole you want to make, but for a big hole, those can get pricey. A dremel has always worked well for me for cutting intakes in plexi windows, but I've never put an intake right in a metal side. I have cut plenty of cases with my dremel for other reasons though, so I think it would still do the trick, but wouldn't be as clean of a circle as a holesaw.

Some pictures of your current setup might help figure out the best course of action.

Ok. And I meant holesaw when I said "hole drills," I forgot the word for them.

I wanted to do an intake for the CPU, and over the video cards, both using 120mm fans.

As verran told me just the other day its a not a case of adding fans here and there.... you need get the hot air out rathere than just blowing the same hot air round and round. with a 120mm fan over the video cards your likely to blow all the hot air on the the mobo and chip set. then the hot air would probably rise and then get sucked in to your cpu fan...
LivingGhost
Meh, I'm not going to do it. My computer is fine, I suppose.

I have never been able to find temp probes and a way to read them, so I don't really know...
firky
by all means do it. just take your time to work out where the blow holes are needed top its normly a good place as hot air rises and the lower the intake the better but dust is a problem if your close to the floor..
LivingGhost
I cannot do that, because I have a Lian-Li case, so the top is not removable, and I do not feel like removing all my components to do it.
firky
awww that sucks

I would have to say:

do 2x 120MM Holes/Fans

One Center with the CPU and one Center with the PCI Slots.

Make the one on the CPU and Intake
the one by the PCI cards Exhaust

Check cpu temps in the Bios..

Reverse them.

See which ones are colder.

1 Set of fans I have personally done:
On the front side of the case that gives you access to everything I have put 120MM Intake by the PCI slots
and on the Oppsite side of the Case I fit in 2 80MM fans off to the side as an Exhaust: this seemed to help out a lot.

When you install sets of fans, its all test and tune:

Keep re-ranging them till you get the temps you like.

Keep in mind installing fans on the side of the case can be a pain in the butt, due to the wiring it will always be their and you can snag the wiring takeing the cover off and putting it on..

That was a while back before modding became refined, so you were some of the first to pave the way to modern modding thumbs-up.gif Haha, still better than I could do
