Basically what i am looking for is a clear coat (in a can that i can use with a paint sprayer) that is used in automotive applications that i can buy in a local store. it seems that the only thing that local automotive stores (pepboys, autozone, etc) have are the aerosol cans. i want it like normal paint. the only clear coat that hardware stores carry are polyurethane/other products for wood.
i could resort to buying it off the net however i like buying stuff for 'projects' locally.
any help? like specifically what it's called?

You could probably buy some off a local body shop

I would check your local auto parts stores. Not the pepboys type of place but your Real parts stores. Find one in the phone book that lists paint supplies or find out where the body shops get thier supplies.

Also look in a boat shop in your area.

make sure you get the right type to match the paint...
you can get acrylic or cellulose clearcoat, and it's also called lacquer
