http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558...2129TX1K0000532On the other hand, these can probably be expected to work for a good long while...

Indeed a great idea from WD

modders will flock over this
Yes great idea but, how often would you really look at the top of your harddrive? While its inside of a case, and usally not in a very visable place. And how many people would have cases like the ones they listed?

Many Lian Li cases mount the hard drives on their side. That HD would look great in one.

For $350 if you do an array that's over $700...I can do SCSI w/ 320mb sustained transfer rates and be much better off...most HDs are in racks under optical drives anyways, so this is really nothing big for most modders, but I'm sure many people will buy it just for the "look at me, I'm 1337" factor.

Well hey, maybe WD wants to have "look at me im 1337" factor?

http://case-mods.linear1.org/hard-drive-mod/i like that one better ^^^ tho its not as bling as the wd one
heres another one:
http://www.grynx.com/index.php/projects/pl...rddrive-window/^^^ that ones a hack job tho - in order for a hard drive to be opened its gadda be a "Class - 1" dust free environment - meaning that there is literally NO DUST at all -- your bedroom or anywhere in your house has enough dust in it to kill thousands of harddrives in just 1 square inch of air and that guys dremelling out the lid ON the harddrive LOL
but 350 bucks for 150 gig 10K drive taint bad at all (thinkin 300gig raid-0

)

they look cool, yes, but i have a real problem with corporations stealing ideas from modders. some might object to this, but its the way i see it.

some of us don't want to waste our time (or don't have the time) to do a mod ourself if one's readily available. For example, I'm very glad that you can easily get a windowed case and don't have to do it yourself.

they should have just saved everyone some cash by not putting that stupid clear cover on, it was a good idea.....in theory, but who the heck wants to look at your Harddrive go round and round....cuz thats all a hard drive does......
so you could either play BF2 or CS:S on your computer or you could watch your computers harddrive spin? hmmm, uhhh.ummmm....... *quote: a mindless idiot*"ill take the hard drive!!!"

I think it looks pretty cool myself. The price seems a little steep, but that's my problem, not Western Digital's.

It's fairly simple, use your bathroom get anything fabric out (towels etc) and steam up the room.Any dust particle will get wet and fall to the ground or stick to the wall.Use a wet mop to do the floor and your dust free room is ready after the steam is gone. Dont open the door though loll
You must have all your stuff in a plastic bag ready inside the room any cracks under the door must be blocked windows closed etc. Also wearing something like a painting or shower cap or paper thing the surgeons wear is even better if you have long hair. That way it's almost 90% guarenteed dust free depending on the bathroom hygene you start with loll.

EDIT: also, try not to work over your drive, your body constantly sheds dead skin cells even more from the head

The simple fact is that it's not possible to duplicate clean room conditions in your home or workshop. It's the one reason I would never make a clear window drive. You might get something that works for a few months, but I'd just prefer to get much more time out of my stuff.
OTOH, I'm disappointed in how expensive the drive is. A Western Digital Caviar 160 GB SATA drive on Newegg goes for $85. Charging FOUR TIMES that much for one with a windows just seems like bad business to me...

Nice hd, But I think many modders will void the warranty. We like to add things. Humm a clear top? What can I do with that?

The WD1500AH is a model "for gamers", while the enterprise version is known under the name WD1500AD and comes with TLER (Time Limited Error Recovery) marchitecture.
I'm sure it's easy to figure out which one has the clear cover.
