This is my glowpad, and this is my post on what I used as the top surface, it's very smooth for mouse pads- Click Me! The idea is simple a piece of lit plexi with another layer on top for the mouse surface. Here are the pics:
*In case you are wondering, the back of the mousepad is lined with foam, like the one that comes with motherboards in the box. And, the pics are taken with Uber's cam. Thanks man!

theres already backlit plexi/plastic surfaces with etched lettering for various OTHER applications so the actual technology is probably not pattentable...but i have'nt seen any light-up mousepads really yet...MANUFACTURE IT AND SELL IT LIKE MAD!!!!! make your e-millions and go beat up Mr.Gates on his own golf course. id like to see someone use air-hockey technology in a mouse pad to make their mouse float around

But, it's given me the motivation to cut some plexi .

That looks really good. It totaly beats the crap out of my 10 dollar staples pad, eventhough it has been working quite well.

yes USB powered. and it looks alot brighter than it is.

The next glowpad I will make will run with a Lazer LED (sunbeam tech), so it could light up my whole desk. It will be ULTRA bright

LazerLEDS Oh god - a wast of money.... honestly why spend 20 bucks on 3 leds, and a resistor? when you can go buy 50 LEDS of the same brightness or birghter off of ebay for 10? its a ploy to steal your money.
