I just made myself a glowpad, and I needed some durable and mouse-friendly material for the top. After an hour or two of looking around my house, I've found the BEST material for a pad. It works 2x better than my normal mouse pad I bought a while ago. Do you know those ring binders? (here's a pic to let you know what the hell im talking about: CLICK ME) The covers for them are made of cardboard sleeved in thin vynil sheets. Well those plastic/vynil sheets are wonders! My MX518 just GLIDES on the piece I put on top of my mat. It's amazing, you guys should try it for any mouse pad mods! Hope this helps! ph34r.gif

I would like to try that, got any pics? I need something better than the
$0.01 one I got from ebgames.

Unfortunatley, I have no camera. It looks something like this though: Link The difference is that it's all blue, square (with rounded corners), and not that bright. I would not part with my laser led which i paid 20$ on, so I just used 1 superbright blue led. Runs off a usb port. The top vynil is black, and looks dang cool.

So to make one I would just follow This guide and glue that material from a binder to the top?

If I can get a binder to rip apart in going to try that. Is the glowpad and easy project? Im always looking for something to keep myself busy.

That's the idea, that guide covers it fairly well. Don't just glue the material on top though, use double sided tape and stick it on. Much neater. Hope this helps!
BlitzBomb, this is a very easy project. Took me a day, that's cutting the plexi, sanding it, making the circuit for the led, and searching for suitable top materials. It looks great too in the end! Just make SURE, and I mean ABSOLUTLEY SURE that there will be NO shorts in the led circuit (that's if you will be plugging it into USB). Failure to do can fry your motherboard. Just test it out with a multimeter or on an old PC befure you use it on your good one. Good luck!

Ok thanks, I think I got some of that tape laying around and maybe a binder.

I've been wanting to build one of those suckers for the last year or so! Maybe I'll finally crack down and make one!

Bah! I cant find the right binder! All the ones I have my mouse skips on.

EDIT: I found that the cover of those 5 star notebooks work pretty well.

Get a girl, j/k, I am wondering the same...

On 2nd thought, maybe mine tracks so well because the Logitech MX 518 goes up to 1600 dpi. Nevermind, I just got back from testing it with my dad's basic Logitech optical mouse, also works great. Maybe the binder you had was different. Keep looking for a good binder!
computergee
Ya, probably my binder. I got my FiveStar Notebook cover thingie now, works good. Im gonna get some plexi-glass tomarrow or when ever I can get a ride.
94Camaro
Another mouse surface that I've found that is absolutely perfect is the kind of nylon that these CD cases are wrapped in. My 510 is sooooo smooth on this stuff. I just can't find anyplace to buy that material and may have to hack up a CD case. laugh.gif

Interesting idea 94Camaro, I just might hack up my 96 CD holder. Maybe. I really like how the glowpad turned out. It looks surprusingly professional and its practical all at the same time, maybe I'll post some pics later on. Oh by the way, Uber, can you bring your mom's camera to school so I can grab a few quick shots of the pad? The only thing im kind of "meh" on is the brightness of the led. With both the ceiling light and my desk lamp on, the glow is not very noticable at all. With all the lights turned off it's very visible, but not as birght as I hoped for. Other than that, looks really pro. I might have to sand it a bit more to get more diffusion of light on the edges for the glow to stand out more, but I like it as it is for now. Again, Uber, It would be great if I could use the cam, or maybe I'll lend u the pad for a day so u can take a few pics and I'll just get it back at school. ph34r.gif

As it's nice to have pad material that companies use to mass produce mousing surfaces, the binder vynil works better and smoother than any mouse pad I've ever used. The suggested CD storage cover (94Camaro) works well, although I've tried it with 3 CD cases, and the binder top still works the smoothest.

there are a lot of school supplies that you can use as a mouse pad(I had to learn the hard way) but that's a cool idea!
