Hey guys I need your expertise! I am building a rig for a friend and haven't had alot of experience with some of the newer high-end video cards (I'm still using my trusty 9800 pro) and I am wondering about PSU requirements. He bought this card and this PSU. I know the card says it only requires a 300w but I want to hear your personal opinions and experiences. Will this cut it or should I tell him to get more? Thanks guys

no es suffeciente. you need to get at least 500w, well 480+. stick with antec if you want.

what other components dude? it's an antec so it'll be decent, 350W may be close but depending on what else is in there it may fly with no problem.

people we don't need all this power! iit's 6800gt AGP? what else?

It will be pretty basic I guess, Asus P4P800 deluxe mb, Prescott P4 3.4GZ, only one burner, one SATA drive, a couple of case fans and that is pretty much it for power. Do I really need 500 watts?

Since you were considering a 350watter i'm assuming you will prefer to spend less(who wouldnt), but I wouldnt go with lower then a good quality 400 watt psu if you plan on upgrading. I think this tagan 450 will fit your bill well, and still have more then enough power for the rig you described - so long as you dont need almost perfectly solid rails for serious overclocking(not saying that that psu will hinder your oc any on that rig, but it wont cut it if you decide to "go big" someday and really push some hardware).

Oh, and as a bit of a bonus the p4 and atx connectors are pre-sleeved and it has a blue led fan - you may like that if you're into that sort of thing.

Thanks for the advice I think you are right and it looks like he is going to have to spring for a bigger PSU.

My shop builds high-end P4 systems all the time with 350W power supplies that come stock in our cases... no problems yet I haven't had one I've built be underpowered or come back with issues.

Didn't have that vid card though. I could agree on 400W to be safe, but you owuldn't need more than a good quality 400W I can 100% guaruntee it.

If there is no intention of overclocking, one hard drive, one optical drive, and the 6800GT, then the 350 Antec will be adequate. If he wants to add a hard drive in the future, or overclock a bit, then it would be a good idea to go with more power. There's no harm in having a PSU that's more than what you need. wink.gif
